^ I'm not sure why that film didn't do a bit better than it did. Too gory? Too cheesy? No Jodie Foster? That last one, probably.

I love it, I think it's one of Ridley Scott's best.

not sure which one you mean? i remember you talked about that mass murderer before, maybe that's the one?

anyhow, the opposite situation is also possible:
a film starrs a rather famous sexy female actor, but the film's content does not cater to what one would expect (in other words, it's too good) => people are disappointed, no lasting success.

Look at Striptease: the poster seems to be promising lots of bare skin and some sexy action, but the film just turns the whole topic inside out... it's great, and I hate IMDB forever for giving it such a poor rating.
Incidentally, most of Carl Hiaasen's books are equally great.

lesson learned: always get your target audience right.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I would like a

Linux detector
  • moving through your everyday life, how often have you seen a device (e.g. this) and wondered if there's linux inside it, thinking: "probably yes" - how cool would it be if you could point a detector to it that would then show the kernel version (if any) and maybe more info!

I don't have patience or skill to dig deep enough every time system breaks itself or when I break something because of lack of patience and skill.

reddit is a mean place, but some of its contributors are on a constant crusade to generate intelligent & funny, or at least extremely weird, output.
really, i mean it.
some of the comment battles are epic, ranging from funny remarks to weird dialogs to dadaistic poetry...

Someone posted it on the debian-user mailing list the other day. I don't know if they were quoting from elsewhere or not. We could add it, attributed to "anon" perhaps?

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I'm trying to switch from Firefox to Vivaldi (Chrome or Chromium based). It is having problems with fontconfig, forcing me back to Firefox.

This is on my main Arch Linux PC. Strangely, I do not have the problem on my notebook PC with Fedora.

Tim

PS - I'm not asking for help. I'm just waiting for fontconfig to fix the problem.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ nice.
took me a while to understand that it's really only about the terms, not the software itself.

yes, we should definitely start going down that road.
what else do we need to change?

kill is very offensive, and does not describe the process well. maybe freememalloc or some such would be better? but then, what about free? isn't freedom a very sensitive topic for many people?
personally, i'd like the word keyboard replaced with something more fitting. those aren't keys. they aren't buttons, either.
etc., etc....

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

The comments made me snigger big_smile  The last post was:

Every single time you people decide to change software for no other reason than social justice, all normal programmers decide to be more racist, sexist, transphobic and whatever else pisses you off - for no other reason than just to spite you. We weren't using master/slave terminology before, but you can bet we'll be using it now - every single chance we get.

And we'll be thinking of it. You know, it. The reason why you think it's offensive. And I just want you to know - we weren't thinking of it before... but we are now. Only because of you.

You can claim that such measures hurt everyone, or that it's counterproductive, or that it even hurts our own careers.
It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. Any price will be paid, social justice will fail, and if you don't drop it immediately, you will fail with it.
