[SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

I have just installed a fresh Bl installation (absolutely beautiful, btw). I want to do an apt-update but I have no internet.

The wifi dongle I have on my desktop is showing the available network connections (wifi is working). However whenever I try to connect, the connection is never established (I have triple checked the password).

I have been messing with my router for quite sometime and I do not see the device name under connections while using BL.

However, I just booted into windows on the same machine and I am connected to the internet and the windows machine is recognized by the router.

For some reason ifconfig is not a recognized command. Dont know if that is significant.

Lastly, connecting via ethernet is largely impractical, but can be done in the event this can only be solved with an internet connection.

Can anyone offer any help? Thanks for reading, even if you cant help!

Edit:

I attempted to connect a mobile hotspot with my 4g via my smartphone and my hotspot was recognized by BL, but once again I could not connect.

Edit 2:

Edit 3:

The solution to my problem was as follows:

jigenbakuda wrote:

I came across this Bug Report entitled "network-manager: NetworkManager fails to authenticate with old 802.11bg USB devices"

There were two suggestions from that page that I tried. After I tried the second one, my connection worked.

The 1st was to modify /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules in this manner:

SUBSYSTEM=="net",
ACTION=="add",
DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="1c:7e:e5:5e:cc:0a",

ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0",
ATTR{type}=="1",
KERNAL=="wlan*",
NAME=="wlan0"

Apparently its to fix the long device names, see the original post here.

The 2nd was to modify the file /etc/default/grub in this manner

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="net.ifnames=0
 biosdevname=0"

Apparently this stops the constantly changing mac addresses, see the original post here.

Re: [SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

the last bit seems to indicate that it has nothing to do with the wifi itself.
please show us the output of this, and also this:

sudo lsusb
ping -c3 8.8.8.8
ping -c3 archive.org

Re: [SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

Thank you so much for the response ohnonot.

I thought I had a simple issue, I was not aware that I had kernal / hardware issue. Should I repost my problem in that section of the forum? I will be looking through that section to see if I can fix my problem. I will update this thread if I find any solutions.

Here is the output of the commands that should have been in my original post.

Despite the above command not working, I still restarted NetworkManager. As one might expect, nothing happened.

Edit:
I looked in the folder and there is no file named dhcp-client.conf in the conf.d folder. In fact there are no files in the folder at all.

Re: [SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

The problem with the "sudo cat ..." command sequence not working can be circumvented by taking a slightly different tack:

> cd ~
> cat <<EOF >dhcp-client.conf
> [main]
> dhcp=dhclient
> EOF
> sudo mv dhcp-client.conf /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/

I can't resist saying this (I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet): a pretty significant percentage of wifi cards don't work with Linux out of the box. Many need special drivers and/or firmware and some don't work at all. Hopefully one of the helpful and clever people here can help with that.

Re: [SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

^thanks for your input, tynman, but afaics the device seems to be working and there was at least one detail that suggests that this isn't even wifi-specific.

wth is it doing that? trying different MAC addresses, seemingly randomly, seemingly endlessly?
did you configure the network manager wifi connection to do that? maybe it is misconfigured?

sudo lsusb

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

so it's a USB device.
plugged in externally? make sure the connectors are ok? try a different usb plug? make sure it's at least USB 2.0 (not usb 1.x, can happen on older hardware)?

searching linux Atheros AR9271 no internet brings me staright to debian wiki, there doesn't seem to be anything special.
your machine seems to have the firmware already loaded, but make sure to confirm that 'firmware-atheros' is installed.

edit:
i just contradicted myself, but we cannot rule it out completely that this isn't a wifi driver problem.
however, my suspicion goes strongly towards network-manager acting up (wouldn't be the first time).

Re: [SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

Thanks for the suggestion tynman. I followed it and got this. I don't really understand what the commands are doing, but I followed them.

jigenbakuda@ScottCorp:~$ cat <<EOF >dhcp-client.conf
> [main]
> dhcp=dhclient
> EOF
jigenbakuda@ScottCorp:~$ sudo mv dhcp-client.conf /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/
[sudo] password for jigenbakuda:
jigenbakuda@ScottCorp:~$ cd /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/
jigenbakuda@ScottCorp:/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d$ ls
dhcp-client.conf
jigenbakuda@ScottCorp:/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d$ less dhcp-client.conf

[main]
dhcp=dhclient
dhcp-client.conf (END)

@ohnonot

firmware-atheros is already the newest version (20161130-3).

You asked "did you configure the network manager wifi connection to do that? maybe it is misconfigured?"

I honestly do not know the answer to that. Back before I asked for help on the forum I tried a lot of things. I had no idea what I was doing. I don't know anything about networking so I didn't try too much, but still...

To make sure I was not interfering with the system. I booted into the live cd and ran the majority of the commands you guys asked me to run again, to see how my computer acts with a non-altered distro.

The connection will not connect to the internet in the Live Cd either.

So, I'm not sure if these outputs reveal any difference. I can not access the internet on either distro. I can see the available wireless connections on both distros. It will not connect to the internet on both distros.

Re: [SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

please retry that last command again.

the syslog entries are quite different on the live cd compared to the installed version.
please have a good look at both.
i suspect the difference comes from all the things you tried...

so, from now on let's work on a pristine system.
have you also tested the mobile hotspot? from now on please ALWAYS, to rule out router problems.

are you sure you considered hardware problems also? usb port/cable etc.?

please show us

dmesg|grep -A10 'firmware: direct-loading firmware ath9k_htc/htc_9271-1.4.0.fw'

and do some searches based on error messages, e.g.

Re: [SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

oh, this looks very interesting:
https://blog.bandinelli.net/index.php?p … an-Stretch
a simpler version of this fix could be to (temporarily) add

net.ifnames=0

to the kernel boot command line.
please try.

another thing i saw was to disable ipv6:

sudo -i
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6

(reboot)

I am pleased to report that I am making this report from my newly updated BunsenLabs installation! I have internet.

Thank you so much ohnonot!

I followed the search results you gave at this link

I came across this Bug Report entitled "network-manager: NetworkManager fails to authenticate with old 802.11bg USB devices"

There were two suggestions from that page that I tried. After I tried the second one, my connection worked.

The 1st was to modify /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules in this manner:

SUBSYSTEM=="net",
ACTION=="add",
DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="1c:7e:e5:5e:cc:0a",

ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0",
ATTR{type}=="1",
KERNAL=="wlan*",
NAME=="wlan0"

Apparently its to fix the long device names, see the original post here.

The 2nd was to modify the file /etc/default/grub in this manner

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="net.ifnames=0
 biosdevname=0"

Apparently this stops the constantly changing mac addresses, see the original post here.

If I need to present more information to make this thread more useful to future readers, please let me know what I need to post (commands I need to run and or compare).

I would like to say thank you one more time!

Re: [SOLVED]Wifi, but no internet (NetworkManager failing to authenticate)

^ thanks for sharing the solution!
i think it contains all the information required.

please keep in mind that the udev rule and the grub command line option net.ifnames=0 achieve the same thing. i personally think the latter is more elegant (i've been using it for years, mostly for esthetical reasons), and the former superfluous.
