virtualbox broken after "apt upgrade"

For better or worse I ran the following two commands:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
Which it appears upgraded my kernel from 3.16.0-4-amd64 to 3.16.0-6-amd64

I'm curious if the kernel can be upgraded further and if so how.

The only problem I noticed after doing so was that virtualbox-4.3 was broken. This machine bypasses the login prompt and automatically logs in the primary user. This machine is a vbox host with several headless vbox guests on it. The host is primarily accessed via ssh. The guests are in the autostart script as

(sleep 120s && VBoxManage startvm Quadra_01) &
(sleep 180s && VBoxManage startvm Quadra_02) &
(sleep 240s && VBoxManage startvm Quadra_03) &
(sleep 300s && VBoxManage startvm Quadra_04) &
(sleep 360s && VBoxManage startvm Quadra_05) &
(sleep 420s && VBoxManage startvm Quadra_06) &
(sleep 480s && VBoxManage startvm Quadra_07) &
(sleep 540s && VBoxManage startvm Node_Web) &

After the kernel update the above autostart no longer worked. I purged 4.3 and installed 5.2 from deb file on the command line along with the corresponding extension pack. The autostart still didn't work. Attempting to run one of the guests manually from an ssh terminal:

:~$ VBoxManage startvm Quadra_01 &
[1] 1484
:~$ Waiting for VM "Quadra_01" to power on...
VBoxManage: error: The virtual machine 'Quadra_01' has terminated unexpectedly during startup because of signal 6
VBoxManage: error: Details: code NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005), component MachineWrap, interface IMachine

[1]+  Exit 1                  VBoxManage startvm Quadra_01

Modifying the command line:

:~$ VBoxManage startvm Quadra_01 --type headless &

Seems to work and the guest loads:

:~$ VBoxManage startvm Quadra_01 --type headless
[1] 2004
:~$ Waiting for VM "Quadra_01" to power on...
VM "Quadra_01" has been successfully started.

[1]+  Done                    VBoxManage startvm Quadra_01 --type headless

So I'm able to bring them up manually via command line but am still left scratching my head. Why was the "type" not previously required? Does anyone know what the "signal 6" error is in this context? Does anyone know why these guests still won't come up automatically with the autostart script? Could / should / can these guests be owned by the system itself, rather than under an otherwise unused user account?

Re: virtualbox broken after "apt upgrade"

Pleaes post a VBox.log and dmesg for a failing VirtualBox session. From googling around, it looks like this is a common virtualbox problem. If signal 6 is SIGIOT which is an alias for SIGABRT, then that only means that virtualbox encountered an internal error. This thread for example says it may be a resource allocation error (not enough RAM, whatever) on the host (https://github.com/hashicorp/vagrant/is … -308813850).

A method to have VMs decoupled from your user is using libvirt, which is a VM hypervisor framework that takes care of configuring and running VMs based on Virtualbox, KVM, or Qemu. It has a GUI called virt-manager which exposes a configuration interface to you and also a daemon which can autostart your VMs when you turn on the computer. It will also take care of setting up networking for you if you require that. If you're running headless anyway, you may consider switching to KVM as that tends to have less problems than VB. Setting up networking for it tends to be more involved but the mentioned virt-manager tool takes care of that.

Edit: Or this: https://github.com/hashicorp/vagrant/is … -339014825. Did you reboot afer rebooting the kernel? The VB kernel modules must of course match the userland.

Re: virtualbox broken after "apt upgrade"

Thank you for your quick reply and sorry for my delayed response. I haven't been able to work on this project in the last week but your libvirt and virsh mention has made interesting reading in the meantime.

I ran the same command in an ssh terminal and then checked the vbox.log. There wasn't one. Nothing at all registered. The date on the existing log in that machine's folder still bears the date of the last time it was started.

I ran 'dmesg' at the prompt and am pasting it here. I'm apparently not allowed to attach files.

Re: virtualbox broken after "apt upgrade"

Hi capncrunch, when you have a lot of data like that to post, please enclose it in BBC code tags, so it takes up less space on the screen.
I've edited your post thus, so you can hit the "edit" button to see what I did.
(Sorry I can't help with your issue, though.)

Re: virtualbox broken after "apt upgrade"

@OP: I would suggest trying to recreate config files for the VMs. For example, change certain setting for the VM, save it, then change it back, and again save the config.

Also: check that you have updated the GuestAdditions (if you have had it installed before).

OTOH, if VMs are meant to be started as headless, then adding '--type headless' actually seems natural. Why are you 'complaining'?  smile

Re: virtualbox broken after "apt upgrade"

@johnraff
Thank you for the fix. I didn't know how to do that.

@iMBeCil
The issue is not the headless flag. The issue is that the machines no longer start without it so something has changed and I would like to know what.
Additionally, the more important issue is that even with the headless flag the machines no longer start automatically with a batch command on system startup from /home/user/.config/openbox/autostart. I have to ssh into the machine and bring them up manually. That's less than ideal.

As I said, perhaps VM config files have to be changed ('<VMNAME>.vbox' file). Or, check the VBoxManage help.

Instead of

(sleep 120s && VBoxManage startvm Quadra_01) &

try with the full paths:

(sleep 120s && /absolute/path/to/VBoxManage startvm /absolute/path/to/Quadra_01.vbox) &

Note the path to ".vbox" config file. This should normally be something like:

/home/<user>/VirtualBox\ VMs/Quadra_01/Quadra_01.vbox

I have just checked, it works, at least from the command line.
