Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

Favourable Japanese review of rc1, tested on a VM with only 256MB of RAM, and OpenOffice Writer found to work OK:
https://report.hot-cafe.net/bunsenlabs-linux-4951
And installation instructions + Japanese input setup:
https://report.hot-cafe.net/bunsenlabs-install-4961
Note: they used unetbootin, but it worked apparently.

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

About dedomedo, well he did find the download link this time, so extra points for him, I do wonder what he meant with

you get the horrible ergonomics of Openbox, which is simply not suited for any reasonable, modern work.

since I found most DEs just that, actually I wouldn't know what to use if there was no openbox.

^ Sorry in advance for my snideness here...

Ed Begley, Jr. really needs to get out of the house more. This guy is reminding me of Jay Leno, he has the attention span of a hamster and thinks he's funnier than he really is. Oh, crap, I just described myself.

^ With almost no reasoning other than "I like this! This is neat."

That said, "This is neat." 10/10, would recommend. But, please, at least read the Release Announcement before you do an on-the-fly review.

Not really a review, but right now BL is #83 and rising on distrowatch.org (default view: last 6 months). Congratulations to everybody involved!

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

I like the user review ratings page best:

https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=ranking

^ It's important to ignore the Slackware rating though, Slackers are notoriously evangelical...[1]

[1] This is a joke. Slackware is awesome!

^I used Slitaz long ago and it was amazingly tiny and light, with an openbox desktop. Had no idea they were still going. cool

It's super encouraging to see us climb the DW ladder.  We broke the top 30 today.

Discussion starts at 8:05, after some infomercial-sounding godawful "music".

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

^Thanks for finding that.
A very thorough and fair review I thought.

A couple of things:

the boot process itself isn't very elegant. For instance, the GRUB menu is supposed to have a wallpaper similar to the wallpaper used for the login screen and desktop but on my laptop it was rendered in black and white, with greyish blobs where the gradients are supposed to be. As the text in the GRUB menu is white much of it was unreadable.

I wonder what's happened here? The grub menu looks fine on all my installs.

...post-installation shell script. The script starts with a warning: we are not supposed to add Ubuntu PPAs or untrusted repositories, nor are we to add repos for other Debian releases.

Is it time to drop that Stern Warning?

This was nice to read though:

DistroWatch's slogan, "put the fun back into computing", very much applies to BunsenLabs.

I personally think this warning is still valid.  I believe you need accommodate the lowest common denominator.  Saying that thought, there always be that special group who won't read that warning regardless and steam on blindly.

I thought the DW review was one of the more positive ones I have read.

person clearly knows what they're talking about, i like that.
"It is simple and copmplicated at the same time" wink

Is it time to drop that Stern Warning?

no. never.
and it should be extended to skype & chrome repos and whathaveyou.

edit:
oh, i like how they immediately start researching the conky issue, as seen in the screenshot! you wouldn't see that on one of dedoimedo's reviews, yes?
and later on - this poem:
"Mitternacht heisst diese Stunde;
sie rufen uns mit hellem Munde:
Wo seid ihr klugen Jungfrauen?"

Re: BunsenLabs Reviews

Holy derivatives, Batman!

I never thought I'd see another BL review on DW. I was really pissed at Jessie's comment in his initial review of Hydrogen, about how BL served no purpose and debian LXDE would do the same thing, more or less. I left a couple of comments at the time and was banned from posting. I was stunned when Jessie accepted my email to post the news of our Helium release, I thought we were done there.

This review is fantastic. How cool that they did it so soon after our release, and that it's the first article in the current DW Weekly! Obviously our page-hit count was a factor, as well as that of ArchLabs (that new review will be soon, you'll see... https://www.distrowatch.com/weekly.php? … #archlabs).

Who's this new reviewer? Such a cool hooman!

@MalPasa, thanks for posting!

All those gorgeous scrots, I might faint from delight.

...The only choice of software that I couldn't quite understand was the office software: you get LibreOffice Writer but instead of LibreOffice Calc you get Gnumeric....

I thought the same thing when I first installed BL. I have since install LibreOffice. Good review though coming from Distrowatch. Don't know the author of the review either.
