mouse cursor is extremely big [SOLVED]

It's a very strange thing that is happening in my newly installed helium bunsenlabs. When the mouse cursor moves to my google chrome frame, it becomes extremely big. Is there anyway for the mouse cursor to stay the same size? It's very unusual. I have never had this kind of thing.

p.s. the mouse cursor also changes size when it rolls over to folders. Is it just something special in the new helium version?

I googled and it seems this is a common problem for high solution screens

No, it's not a helium issue we've heard of yet. Hopefully someone will give you some troubleshooting steps to take.

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Yes, HiDPI support is very tricky for a desktop like BunsenLabs, unfortunately.

Does this only happen with Chrome?

If you try Chromium (from the Debian repositories), do you have the same problem?

You can set the DPI to match that of the display by editing ~/.Xresources and then un-commenting and changing the Xft.dpi line to the correct value.

hi, yes it's the same problem when I use chromium.

okay, so I deleted the ! in front of Xft.dpi: and changed 96 to 60. But nothing seemed to change.  In fact, my folders became smaller but my cursor is still huuuuuge.

p.s. I tried

xrdb -query

and this is what I got

Is it possible to delete the files in the cursor themes that refer to 48 by 48. How do I find the folder with all the cursors in them?

Is your display actually 60DPI? That seems rather low.

Put the exclamation mark back in that line and perhaps try

Xcursor.size: 16

before hacking away at the cursor themes.

It still doesn't work sad From what I read by googling posts about similar problems, it seems to only way to make it work is by hacking away at the cursor themes.

Re: mouse cursor is extremely big [SOLVED]

I'm in a similar boat. Massive mouse when on firefox and also when mousing over files in thunar. It wasn't a problem when I first upgraded. It's hard to be sure, because I've been doing lots of configuring and personalising after the new release, but I think it might have happened soon after I tried to bring Bunsen-blue over from my backup.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/197828/ … screen-dpi
or
https://www.sven.de/dpi/
warning: better to actually take a ruler to the screen and measure it.
i was surprised that my screen is not 96, but 99dpi.

somehow i don't think it will solve your problem, but it's worth a try.

have you tried with various different cursor themes? maybe install some new ones?

Re: mouse cursor is extremely big [SOLVED]

You could try changing themes:

sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme

Also maybe the priority number?

Re: mouse cursor is extremely big [SOLVED]

Ok, here's my messy solution. I made a copy of DMZ (White) and deleted all the references to 48X48 and 32X32 in it. It doesn't seem ideal, but it works.

  • Download this: davy.tyrrell.co/downloads/DMZ(White)Small.tar.gz

  • Extract it into /usr/share/icons/

  • Extract it into ~/.icons/ or ~/.local/share/icons

  • Open the GTK Appearance gui (lxappearance) and select DMZ (White) Small

  • If you can't find it there, restart and try again (or if you don't want to restart refer to the link hhh has posted below)

There are a number of thing which don't make sense here. I don't like using /usr/share/icons/ but if I put it in ~/.local/share/icons/ it doesn't show up in the LXAppearance gui thingy.

edit: I just tried putting it in ~/.local/share/icons/ again just there and it worked. Perhaps it's because I restarted the pc? That seems unlikely, because I can change it now without restarting. Perhaps it was because I changed the title so there were no spaces? Maybe. I don't know.

If I put it in the local icon folder and try add it to x-cursor-theme in the debian alternatives it doesn't work.
I also tried packaging it so it can be installed through the lxappearance gui, but no joy there either.

Re: mouse cursor is extremely big [SOLVED]

@Davy, I followed your steps and it worked!

p.s. I was just getting used to the incredibly huge cursors! But thank you! I feel better with the normal sized mouse cursor now!

Rebooting will update the icon/cursor cache, so that probably is the reason. There's a command for that too.
