Re: [Resolved]Is there documentation on how to add a VPN connection?

@cloverskull

Thanks for the pointer. I went to read your documentation and I'm not sure how to comment to it. I have concerns. Are you a contributor to BL Linux, working on an implementation of VPN in Bunsenlabs Linux? Is your write up directed toward testing of the implementation?

I have been using the VPN provided by crunchbang and Bunsenlabs Linux in the past. My assumption has always been that underneath the hood, the VPN is providing secure network communication within my intranet and that my VPN is an independent network unavailable to the outside world.

I assume that the configuration files that you suggest using from:

are for configuration only and require no further dependence on nordcdn.com?

Presumably, there other configurations that can be used, but you are recommending these files as a good starting point?

However, I'm totally lost as to why firefox would have anything to do with the VPN, unless the purpose is solely for testing it at https://ipleak.net/ and https://www.dnsleaktest.com.

Is this the case? If so, once the VPN is tested, can't I revert back to a standard Firefox configuration?

I apologize for hesitating, but I would like be sure then when I move forward and follow your instructions that the VPN will be used as I mentioned earlier, i.e. totally and only for my intra-net. I especially apologize because I probably have just enough knowledge to get myself in trouble without really knowing the technical details in depth.

Re: [Resolved]Is there documentation on how to add a VPN connection?

@matric

I checked and network-manager-openvpn is installed.

I'm using Google's DNS at 8.8.8.8.  I have used it a number of times in the past with no problem.

As near as I can tell, all the data I'm entering is valid information. hmmmm. Later tonight, I'm going to try again and double check at every step.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I appreciated your taking the time.

BunsenLabs makes no specific provisions for virtual private networks and there have been no changes in that respect since the Hydrogen release.

The Debian wiki has a page about OpenVPN, if that helps:

Re: [Resolved]Is there documentation on how to add a VPN connection?

@Head_on_a_Stick

I took a look at the debian URL that you pointed me to. I may go back to it later, but on a first reading of it, much of that document is not clear to me. I think it will take some very careful reading, a lot reading between the lines, and a mentor for it to be useful to me.

In addition, I have an update. I'm not sure what I did that changed the state of my PC. It could have been rebooting. Whatever the reason, I now have an openVPN connection using my ethernet port. That's the good news.

The bad news is that the IP address is not static and will change each time I reboot.

So for now, my real problem is that I cannot assign my IP address to my PC, not that the ethernet connection is unavailable.

I'm going to leave this thread open and take it to one or two other forums to see if I can find out how to set the static IP address for this PC.

I will update this thread when I have more information.

Re: [Resolved]Is there documentation on how to add a VPN connection?

Hey, maybe this info is useful. I use Windscribe, they provide support for Debian stable, including a cli for logging in, connecting, disconnecting, etc... Here are the packages it pulls in on a new helium install...

root@TyrellCorp:/home/rachel# apt install windscribe-cli
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following additional packages will be installed:
  easy-rsa libccid libpkcs11-helper1 opensc opensc-pkcs11 openvpn pcscd
  resolvconf stunnel4
Suggested packages:
  logcheck-database
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  easy-rsa libccid libpkcs11-helper1 opensc opensc-pkcs11 openvpn pcscd
  resolvconf stunnel4 windscribe-cli
0 upgraded, 10 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 11.8 MB of archives.
After this operation, 16.2 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

No, he can't sleep on the floor. What do you think I'm yelling for?!!!

Re: [Resolved]Is there documentation on how to add a VPN connection?

I'm made significant progress, since I now have an ethernet connection working on my Helium PC, using openVPN. I still have a minor issue which I believe should be under its own topic, so I'm closing this thread and will re-open under a new post.

Thank for the input from many on this issue.

Hi
Old topic, fully aware of this but for the record, I thought I would mention
VPNGate with proxy with a decent tutorial here
this may help someone at some point.
