Terminator vs urxvt vs others (1 mor time)

https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic … 061#p71061
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic … 063#p71063

This can easily end up going to Topics Going Nowhere, but, one more time, why do you like the terminal you use? And if you were going to release a distro, which would you use and why?

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Re: Terminator vs urxvt vs others (1 mor time)

Urxvt due to possibility to
- adjust line height in .Xresources (hate crowded text)
- starts fast

I do have to admit missing stuff, especially splitting tiling thing from terminator would come in handy sometimes (tmux is not a replacement really).

Re: Terminator vs urxvt vs others (1 mor time)

It's easy enough to install urxvt (I always do) but one of the nice things about Bunsen (and previously #!) is that it's very approachable by people coming from other OS platforms, specifically Windows or MacOS. I think the ability to right-click copy and paste is something lacking in urxvt which will turn off some people interested to explore.

I treat this distro as a gateway drug to serious linux-ing. The fact that it bridges the gap between usability and OS ricing is something I think we should continue to index on.

Terminator works fine. I can see you might want something more but then surely by definition you are capable of installing and setting it up so no need to disturb the basic Bunsen set up.

Even if it works with alt+middlemousebutton or ctrl+alt+c or +v or ctrl+right-click, I do agree that a missing copy and paste on right-click is kind of a disadvantage for newbies. I do like urxvt, apart from the points mentioned because of the possibility to configure it very easily as a dropdown terminal with yeahconsole. I think tiling is also possible with dvtm.
I'd say Terminator is a bit more user-friendly out-of-the-box (also Tilix) and it is doing a great job. I suppose Terminator was a good choice back in the days. Speaking of terminals: I will have to test Termite one day, that's the one I often read about but did not test it yet.

While fontconfig can modify aspects of font appearance, unfortunately it doesn't do line spacing/line height. There is a nifty python tool to modify TTF/OTF font line spacing called font-line (https://github.com/source-foundry/font-line). Creating new font versions seems a bit of a kludge but if the application doesn't offer the ability I haven't found much else.

@cpoakes, thanks for link, still can't shake the feeling that any app showing text should have that basic ability built in and nurtured.

Why did corenominal choose Terminator? What are it's distinct qualities?

The split pane aspects of it would be my guess; urxvt (any terminal emulator) + tmux can duplicate that.

I usually go with urxvt and sakura as my terminal emulators. Memory use for sakura is about the same as xfce4-terminal. and also has the copy/paste on the pull-down menu. If only it did drop-down like xfce4-terminal.

Can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need.

@PackRat If you tweak it a bit, you might be able to use Sakura with Yeahconsole (which is a simple wrapper for x terminals) as dropdown terminal (it does work with urxvt).

Re: Terminator vs urxvt vs others (1 mor time)

I prefer rxvt-unicode with tmux if tabbing & tiling is required — tmux can also be used as a simple tiling window manager for the console, which is nice.

Urxvt is the lightest & fastest and only lacks in respect of right-click configuration options but then so does tint2.

For copy&paste, left-click and drag to select then middle click to paste seems *much* more convenient than pressing several keys but perhaps I'm just strange.

EDIT: s/right/left/ roll

The tint2 GUI config tool offered in BL works quite well, FYI! big_smile

I really need to learn to do this. I have 9 terminals open presently. I have been wanting a window with six equal terminals that sit on one desktop.  From top left to bottom right: journalctl -xf, ~/.xsession-errors, mocp , then two work-related terminals and one working terminal along the bottom. Then on my main desktop I would have my main working terminal (I resize this one constantly) and another terminal that is a vagrant box running my back-end development server related stuff. Usually if I am in this one, it means I am doing SQL stuff so this terminal stays at or near fullscreen.

Agreed, and this is what I've been doing for years, but that's using the primary buffer, not the secondary "clipboard". Sometimes you need access to the clipboard, that's when Ctrl+Alt+C/V comes in. Also the primary selection is volatile - make a slip and something quite unrelated replaces what you wanted to paste.

Another urxvt trick: you can double-click a word to select it, much easier than click-and-drag. Discovered last week.

Yes, that is annoying.

double-click a word to select it

Triple-click to select the whole line wink

EDIT: works in the browser too.

Re: Terminator vs urxvt vs others (1 mor time)

double-click/triple-click select also works in lxterminal, and I'm guessing most others.

True, come to think of it, and in text editors, mail apps...

Re: Terminator vs urxvt vs others (1 mor time)

Anyone remember good ol' RoxTerm? That one was easily configurable and can even be made into a dropdown terminal. Shame the developer stopped maintaining it, and Terminator comes quite close to emulating its features.

had a good look at this yesterday; seems mlterm is a very fast terminal emulator, has a gui for configuration, and is still being developed.
