Compiz not working. please help

I am running Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS on Hp elitebook 820. I am trying to customize with ccsm but I have to run compiz --replace in terminal to get anything working at all. But I have been having this issue that I can not seem to figure out. Please help.

Have you tried running it as your normal user?

Yes i did.. I actually was able to get it going by logging out and logging back in as root. Then i ran compiz --replace and its going now.. But how come i have to be logged in as root? It doesnt work if im logged in as user and run sudo compiz --replace...

Is that the Ubuntu Compiz or something else (i.e. compiz-reloaded, which kicks the Ubuntu version's butt)? What desktop are you running?

Is GNOME 3 supposed to be able to work with Compiz? I kinda sorta dimly remember that it's not supposed to, but I could be wrong. I thought you were supposed to be using the native effects or extensions.

FWIW, we do have compiz-reloaded working really well on MX Linux, and it has the cool effects like "Burn" and "Beam" that the 0.9X version got rid of. I also have a version for Debian Buster in a separate OBS repo that I have had good reports about. There is a repo for Debian releases on tuxfamily,org for it, too.
