my labtop enters a zombie mode after being idle for one hour

Ever since I installed a video driver update, my computer has this very weird problem: when I leave it on for a hour or so, everything stops working. The network is automatically disabled, and even shut down key is disabled. I can still use the desktop, but I cannot even shutdown the computer anymore, not even by doing "sudo shutdown 0" in my terminal. It used to be even wierder when I had the option of having a blank screen. When my computer was idle for a few minutes, the blank screen activates to save power, but then when I try to go back to my desktop, everything disappears. I can't even access to TTY window. Ever since I have disabled the blank screen option.

So I know maybe I could try to uninstall the video driver update, but I need it to run matlab, and I don't know what other option there is.

What actually happens after you run `sudo shutdown 0`?

Have you tried

poweroff

If you have used the power button to perform a hard reset any more than a few times then your filesystem is probably already damaged, as I warned you in the other thread.

I don't know what other option there is.

Try the backported fglrx drivers, as I suggested in your other thread:
