Wireless not connecting

I'm trying to connect my old Dell laptop to my wireless network. I know next to nothing about wireless, but following instructions from my ISP, I did get Windows to connect. I then tried Bunsen lab, but no joy. Since Bunsen has failed to work for other parts of the laptop, I popped in a Crunchbang live USB and booted from that, and yes, it connected with no problem.

Anyway, I saw this sticky. So hopefully I can paste the results. Since the laptop isn't on the network, I couldn't install rfkill (h'm, didn't check to see if it might already be there.)

When I boot up Bunsen, there is the network icon in tint. I click on that, and see my router. I click on that, and it asks for a key. I enter that, the icon spins for a bit and the prompt comes back asking for the key again.

What can I do to get this thing working.

Thanks,
David

Re: Wireless not connecting

Can we see the output of those commands from CrunchBang as well please?

For some reason your `lspci` output only shows your ethernet card (although the wireless device shows up in `dmesg`), are you sure that you have posted the entire output?

Can we also see the full output of `lspci -knn`

Apparently, the new firmware supplied for your wireless chipset sometimes has problems, you can download the "classic" firmware from here:

http://www.lwfinger.com/b43-firmware/br … 38.tar.bz2

Place the files under /lib/firmware and they will be loaded automatically upon rebooting wink

Copy/paste error on my part. the end of the lspci text was at the beginning of the dmesg text.

No sure if I was supposed to be replacing any files for this. The download had a broadcom*, but I only found three b43* folders in the /lib/firmware directory.

I copied the folder in and rebooted, but no change in outcome.

Yes, sorry about that — I was cribbing the method from an Arch PKGBUILD [1] but I didn't read it properly ops

I think you need to use:

sudo apt install b43-fwcutter
sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware linux/wl_apsta.o # the "linux" folder is in the tarball

Re: Wireless not connecting

Finally getting back to this.
I scratched my head how can I install a package without a working connection, but it turns out that b43-fwcutter is already installed.
So I ran the command, and it appeared to extract files, yet the connection still fails.

Re: Wireless not connecting

Were the files actually added to /lib/firmware?

Anything new in `dmesg`?

how can I install a package without a working connection

The same way most people do it — use the device through which you are posting here to download a .deb for the package(s) from the Debian mirrors and then transfer it to the hapless Debian box (USB sticks are good for this) and use `dpkg` or `gdebi` to install it  wink

Re: Wireless not connecting

I never did get bunsen to connect to my home wifi. I tried on two different laptops. Crunchbang can connect on both. Windows can connect on the laptop with windows installed.

The other day I was at the local library, which has wifi, and bunsen WAS able to connect to that! It found the server, and took the password with no problem. So it seems to be a problem between connecting to my home wifi and bunsen. (Or I image, the particular protocol that the wifi is using...)

My router is a Westell Versalink model 327W.

Any ideas on how I can proceed?

Thanks,
David

I think so, and no.

Why would it be able to log in to one network but no another if it was a hardware problem in the laptop?

Best to make sure then, don't you think?

Why would it be able to log in to one network but no another if it was a hardware problem in the laptop?

I think the problem is that the stock firmware is buggy so we are trying to make it load different firmware.

The only guide I am going on is the linked PKGBUILD for the Arch Linux AUR package that is claimed (by the ArchWiki) to fix the problem, I have no idea if this technique will actually work in BunsenLabs and no way of testing it.

Re: Wireless not connecting

Checking back in on this issue. I never did get the laptop to connect.

But the basic assumption was that the firmware files in Debian were buggy. (The attempts to use an old version didn't help.)

I see that Helium is on the horizon. What is the likelihood that the firmware in that version of Bunsenlab/Debian may be less buggy? (I am willing to try a net install but only if it there is a chance it will produce a better outcome.)

Thanks,
David

No idea, I wouldn't touch Broadcom c**p with a barge pole so I have no way of testing smile

You can try the unofficial non-free Debian stretch ISO image right now, that will answer your question:
