What's your day job?

Browsing around the various forums, I get the impression that most members work in areas such as sys admin, networks or devops.

Would that be a fair assessment?

My day job is software development (various assemblers, C/C++, Java, C# and some R/python).

What's your day job?

These aren't the answers i was expecting!

I guess it demonstrates my naive assumptions about BL users!

This opens up another question....how did you guys get into Linux and BL?

Read about it in a magazine a couple of years ago and was curious because of a brief experience with UNIX systems in my teens (I used to type my English essays out on a Sun SPARCstation so my Dad could typeset them in LaTeX and print them out on the university laser printer).

Once I tried it, I was hooked.

I got into linux through getting bored with my computer, as for my job, I don't have one. I go to school.

Re: What's your day job?

I work at the Hardware/Software company Alcatel-Lucent. What's really neat is that Alcatel-Lucent owns Bell Labs. So in my office, at Murry Hill, there's a ton of history with the development of UNIX and the Bell telephone system. Upstairs from my desk, is Dennis Richie's old office.

Personally I work in the IMS development and integration department. But working here around all of these other engineers, developers and administrators is very humbling. If you look up the history of Bell Labs..it's a fascinating story...We created a lot in the past!

WOW...surrounded by history.

My first job out of college in 1986 was developing in C, and K&R was like the bible.....you should take pictures of his old office.....you'll be in your rocking chair some day and be able to impress the new kids with your proximity to "the R in K&R" :-)

Re: What's your day job?

Currently work on the local supply chain side of retail (receiving, freight).  It's a paycheck.

Been interested in Linux and FOSS in general since about 1995, but couldn't free myself of hardware dependent on Windows-only drivers (Mandrake couldn't find its way through my winmodem) until the late Oughts, which was when I found Dellbuntu and eventually Debian and CrunchBang.

I can relate to this....currently I'm developing in C# on Windows for a living, with the only saving grace that i get to dabble in C/C++ every now and then.

I'm about as far from an Information Technology occupation as you can get, Substance Abuse Counselor.

I had an old laptop that was grinding to a halt with XP, and my little bro said to try Ubuntu. It ground to a halt with Gutsy Gibbon, so then I found Crunchbang, and started tweaking smile

Well....today i learned something new....just because I've registered on some (relatively) obscure Linux forum, don't assume everyone is a techie!

I'm genuinely humbled (correct word?)...either way, I'm just blown over by the diversity of BL users....completely unexpected.

Comp Sci?

Do they teach C or C++ in college these days? Java still a thing or have they moved to C#?

We're certainly an eclectic bunch! I take that fact as an indication of a healthy and prosperous community.
