Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

Hello!

I have been runnging Bunsenlabs for a couple of weeks now and on my 9 year old Packard&Bell Workstation itś really smooth!

I just have one small problem that I can't find any info about: Mouse-click-menu is gone! It works as it should with "W-space".

Hopefully someone has a hint for me!?

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

This is the stanza that sets the right-click behaviour:

<mousebind button="Right" action="Press">
  <action name="ShowMenu">
    <menu>root-menu</menu>
  </action>
</mousebind>

It should be found in ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml (at line 829), does your file have that?

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

Hi!

Thanks for answer! I have that in rc.xml! First thing I checked! I am not sure what I did before it happened but I activated debian-menu. (ereased now) I have tried to build som packages and therefore installed a lot of dependencies. Too eager I'm afraid! Should have written them down.

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

Yes indeed, I keep an old-fashioned journal myself with notes in it: old skool backups cool

We can try restoring the stock BunsenLabs rc.xml, that should fix your menu (hopefully).

First back up the current version so that you can merge your changes back in later:

cp ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml{,.bak}

Then copy the original from our skel directory (this also contains all of our other local configuration files):

cp /usr/share/bunsen/skel/.config/openbox/rc.xml ~/.config/openbox

Finally, reconfigure openbox to apply the new menu:

openbox --reconfigure

If you had made any changes to openbox's configuration you can now either edit rc.xml directly or use `obconf` to apply them once more.

in this case i suspect your openbox config files are ok, but you did "something" to the desktop.
maybe a conky that fills it all up?
or you started using a desktop manager (icons on desktop)?

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

Hi again! I have followed the steps to get bunsen-menu back but it will not work. I followed the guide to get a dynamic menu instead and that worked for some reason!? But I didn't get mouse-click back! I have conky with BL-conky-manager but when I kill that I do not get mouse-click back. Bunsen with Debian9 is on the way right? I can wait and do a clean install then. Thanks for support!

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

Hi again! I think I have a clue! Just by mistake I right-clicked on tint2 i the middle and there was my menu again! On desktop it is still gone though! Howering the mouse over panel, using the mouse-wheel, I can switch workspace. On desktop no. I have been tinkering a bit with tint2 and jgmenu. (now I have 2 menus in the panel!) Is it tint2 or something with the desktop?

or something with the desktop

^ This, I think.

Can we please see the output of:

grep -v '^#\|^$' ~/.config/openbox/autostart
/usr/lib/{x86_64,i386}-linux-gnu/openbox-xdg-autostart --list

As a test, if you use this command, does your menu work on the desktop afterwards:

pkill conky

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

Hi!
Thanks for suggestion. I made a past of output. It's here (24 hours): https://paste.debian.net/1005377/
pkill conky did not make any difference.

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

(Posting it here directly would have been fine btw)

pastebin wrote:
bgchd -dir /home/womp/Wallpapers -intv 7m -bcknd /etc/autobgch/scripts/feh &
 ~/.config/openbox/wallpapersd &

These lines look weird, what do they do?

If you remove the lines, save the file then log out and back in again, does that fix things?

What is the content of ~/.config/openbox/wallpapersd and what does that `bgchd` command do?

This may help us:

cat $(which bgchd) ~/.config/openbox/wallpapersd

Or maybe not big_smile

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

Well.
pkill compton made nothing. bgchd and wallpapersd are 2 scripts together with feh rotates wallpapers. I found wallpapersd here in the forums and it's a wallpaper per workspace script. They both work very well and I like wallpaper! I disabled compton, conky, and the scripts from autostart but I can only get mouse-click-menu if I click on tint2 panel!
Tint2rc shows:
# Mouse
mouse_middle = none
mouse_right = toggle
mouse_scroll_up = toggle
mouse_scroll_down = iconify

Is that accurate?

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

OK, can we please see the full output of this command:

cat ~/.config/openbox/{menu,rc}.xml

The output will be very long so please use code tags when posting it, thanks!

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

another idea:
you installed plank - but it doesn't seem to be in standard bl repos.
how did you install it? it might have pulled in unpleasant dependencies.

(PS: i just love the swedish translations for some items: "Strömhanterare" - lovely!)

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

Plank is not the problem. Uninstalled it and after reboot no change. Plank has very few deps!
Any idea what this means?: "(synaptic:5174): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_child_watch_add_full: assertion 'pid > 0' failed"

Probably nothing.

If you create a fresh user and log in with that user, do you still have this problem?

Re: Lost right-mouse-click-menu-activation

When I create a new user and use synaptics I get the same message! Strange but it seems to work and installs fine!

I'm sorry but my last post was unclear — I meant to ask if the new user can access the openbox menu by right-clicking on the bare desktop?

I think that message from synaptic is inconsequential.

As far as I can see there is no Earthly reason why the right-click menu does not appear for you on the bare desktop but does in tint2, I am utterly baffled here hmm

Yes, that's right.

Does it work if you call it directly from a terminal?

EDIT: I am beginning to think your machine may be haunted 8o

It may be an idea to run the memtest we have on our Deuterium ISO image. memory chip problems can make the system do funny things sometimes.
