Kernel Weirdness

Hey guys!
So I've been a Linux user for 4 or 5 years now so I thought I had been around the block on install issues. Installing bunsen gave me some issues.

I installed from live disk and everything was fine.
I rebooted and all was well until I updated. As usual, a flood of libraries was updated as well as the kernel.

When I boot kernel 3.16.0-4-amd64 from the Advanced Grub Menu, Bunsen boots normally and I can work.
When I allow Grub to boot kernel 3.16.0-5-amd64 I get issues with not allocating USBs and it boots to a level 3 command line before totally crashing.

Am I missing something here? If so please help

Thanks in Advance,
Erik

can you give us some more output please?
you might need to post your complete

dmesg

output to a pastebin.
also, are you really, really sure that everything was working with the 3.16.0-4-amd64 kernel?
how old is your hardware? if it's less than 4 years old you might benefit from a kernel backport to 4.9.

This is all a bit vague (for me) and I'm not sure what you mean by "level 3 command line" or "totally crashing" but boot issues after kernel upgrades usually indicate a mounting problem (f'nar) — do you have /boot on a separate partition?

Yeah here is my dmesg
https://paste.debian.net/1005153

As for your question about everything working, apart from some graphics issues, I am posting via the machine in question running 3.16.0-4-amd64
So I think I'm good on 3.16.0-4-amd64

Thanks for your help.

Re: Kernel Weirdness

^ that's the dmesg from the working kernel 3.16.0-4.
that's not going to be helpful.

please try to upload a boot log with the ..-5 kernel.
you can save it to a file first, then reboot to the good kernel, or use a command line pastebin utility to upload it.
