my microphone is not working with my computer

So I brought a new microphone and I plugged it into my usb socket. I right clicked on the sound button and went to device and my microphone is now showing under input device. Yes I did click on show all input devices. I checked under all output devices and all other options and it's not there.

I went to terminal and typed in alsamixer and yet it is showing under alsamixer but I don't know how to change it to default audio recorder.

I went to my webcam and looked under cheese, apparently it's still using my built-in microphone. And there is no option to change it.

I opened guvcview and I saw it has option to use my new microphone, but guvcview keeps on crashing! And I can't use guvcview. It might be a bug with guvcview that it keeps crashing.

So, I tried look online everywhere to see how I can make my microphone to be the default microphone so I can use it with cheese, but I tried, QasHctl, Qasmixer, both of which doesn't even open! I am all out of ideas. Please help me! Thank you in advance.

Re: my microphone is not working with my computer

If you get crashes with gui applications, then run them in a terminal and see what the error messages say.

With the microphone plugged in, can we please see the full output of this command:

you should check that the microphone is unmuted, and the level is well above zero.
but,
1) afaiu bunsenlabs is using pulseaudio. so you also have to open the pulseaudio mixer (pavucontrol?) and find the microphone etc.
2) a usb microphone is not an analog sound source, so maybe the process is more complex; maybe alsa doesn't even see it.

its definitely unmuted, and the level is definitely above zero.

1) I opened pavucontrol and I can't find my microphone at all. And I opened alsa mixer but nothing is found. It seems like alsa definitely doesn't see it. In fact, in guvcview I found it under portaudio

Re: my microphone is not working with my computer

Does this set the microphone as the input:

pacmd "set-default-source alsa_input.usb-Blue_Microphones_Yeti_Stereo_Microphone_REV8-00-Microphone.analog-stereo"

If that works, make it permanent by adding the command to /etc/pulse/default.pa; this string will do that for you:

sudo tee -a /etc/pulse/default.pa <<< "set-default-source alsa_input.usb-Blue_Microphones_Yeti_Stereo_Microphone_REV8-00-Microphone.analog-stereo"

@Head_on_a_Stick

It worked! ^_^

Do you happen to know why my guvcview kept on crashing? Is there anyway to fix that as well! You are the best!

I can't tell from the posted error messages, no hmm

It is possible to generate a backtrace from the crashing program that can be used to track down where exactly the program is failing.

Well there's no rush at all, I probably couldn't make sense of it anyway big_smile

Backtraces are usually submitted to the package maintainer as part of a formal bug report so you should just follow that procedure rather than posting it here:

https://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting

The package is from the Debian repositories rather than ours so the bug report should be made upstream to Debian itself wink

Re: my microphone is not working with my computer

hi I just re-installed my bunsenlabs and once again my microphone is not working with my computer. I tried to set

pacmd "set-default-source alsa_input.usb-Blue_Microphones_Yeti_Stereo_Microphone_REV8-00-Microphone.analog-stereo"

but it still doesn't work. The computer doesn't even seem to detect my yeti microphone.

For what is worth here is the output of pacmd list-sources

6 source(s) available.

Yes it does, I can see it in your posted output and the name looks the same to me.

  * index: 2
	name: <alsa_input.usb-Blue_Microphones_Yeti_Stereo_Microphone_REV8-00-Microphone.analog-stereo>

The asterisk seems to indicate that it is already selected as the default device.

Are you sure it is turned on?
