[El Solvedo] Firefox: issues with chrome and form elements

Hi there everyone!

Ages ago, I did something that modified both the look of the Firefox frame as well as form elements. This doesn't affect Chrome, Vivaldi or TOR, just firefox. If possible, I'd like to remove all of the custom elements that are modifying the default look of the browser and form elements but my Googling isn't really coming up with anything useful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure what you mean exactly: Is it the color being black instead of grey? I mean if you change #BĹ theme (Menu/Preferences/Openbox/GUI Config Tool/Theme), the look of Firefox will change as well. As for custom elements I'm not sure either, but you can change whatever you like via Firefox Menu/Customize (remove add-on icons, Firefox icons, etc).

Basically, checkboxes are invisible and text is unreadable in Firefox while rendered in a manner that's viewable in all other browsers.

^Ok, I see. I'm sorry but that was the wrong menu entry above. I meant Menu/Preferences/Appearance/Widget <- if you choose here a different theme, does it get any better?

I do have this issue as well with an add-on with the widget theme Bunsen-Dark-He, because there are black boxes and black letters to type, so it's barely visible. However on other sites there is a lighter color for the letters.

Hi there Martix and thanks very much for your help. Using your method, it did fix the issue. It's unfortunate that Firefox seems to inherit the traits so poorly but at least I've got a usable browser again

Great, that was it then! It looks like the website delivers the font color for the login, but Firefox the background color. If both are dark, it's hard to see what is going on. At least it's a fairly easy fix.

^ Debian in Firefox used to give me this problem when browsing the Debian wiki. I think it is possible to provide a css override for those elements that are not being correctly handled. The problem is, I believe I have not had to mess with that since the #! days, so the chances are I won'r be able to get back to that information. It might be that we need to provide some overrides in the actual gtk definitions. This is one of the annoying problems with using web technologies on the desktop. Most web developers are not thinking about the browser inheriting css definitions from the desktop.

It really does seem like an unintentional occurrence on the part of the Firefox browser. I found troubleshooting threads dating back a decade in which people had this problem with this browser and web forms. It would make sense if the web page were dictating some of these elements but otherwise you would think FF would default to a readable format for usability.

Basically, you need to modify Firefox's forms.css so that it shows properly using a dark gtk theme. Another option would be to use the Stylish addon.

Thanks a bunch, TK. Just to keep the fiddling down to a bare minimum, I'm happy to keep the OB theme to something I don't like as much. FF has it's own dark theme so I'm able to keep the look in the browser. When I migrate back to another browser, I can bring the theme I really like back into action.

This is now under new management, and the recommended alternative seems to be Stylus. (I think there's a beta version coming for Firefox Quantum.)
