[Resolved] LightDM crashes on window mouse-over

Very odd issue! I installed BL on an old IBM A21p. The only changes from the fresh install were to add files to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d to get X working at 1600x1200. LightDM will instantly crash and restart/go to login, if I mouse over a window that I have typed in for many types of window. It will also crash if I put the mouse cursor over a window and then start to type. If I open a window and don't type, then no crash while mousing over it.

Repeatability:
Terminal window - crashes
Xombrero - crashes
LightDM login screen - crashes
Geany - no crash
Iceweasel - no crash
Thunar - crashed once while entering a location to browse to, haven't replicated another crash

I've had to resort to doing all my CLI work for this laptop in a console VT. I had thought maybe something went wrong with the install so I wiped and reinstalled and the issue persisted. I also tried the BL live from the boot DVD and didn't notice it crashing there. I have BL installed from the same media on other ThinkPads (r50p) and have no problems.

What logs would be useful? I'll try to get some output of journalctl during a crash.

Journalctl output from two crashes:

Well, what's in xorg.conf.d?

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Re: [Resolved] LightDM crashes on window mouse-over

Does the issue persist if you remove the xorg configuration files?

How did you install your video drivers?

Re: [Resolved] LightDM crashes on window mouse-over

this model is ~15 years old.
granted, it probably was absolutely high end then.

a problem with your graphics card/driver it is for sure:

AGP 2x - ATI RAGE Mobility 128 - 16 MB SGRAM

so yeah, how did you install your graphic driver?
and, what is the output of

lspci -k | grep -iA5 vga

-snip- hhh

Tried removing the changes and there is no crash. It does look pretty terrible, though.

Nothing was installed, r128 is a stock X.org driver.

Yeah, it is old. I got a literal box full of ThinkPads from a co-worker, in various states of dis-repair. This is one of the few working ones.

Re: [Resolved] LightDM crashes on window mouse-over

Try this out:
https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary
Use the following to setup your xorg.conf

sudo aticonfig --initial

Far too old to have Catalyst support, even in the old releases. :-/

I did some more Google digging and found a page with a similar display problem with a similar chip model. I looked over their setting and realized that SWCursor might work. I put back in my modified configs and also set:

Option "SWCursor" "true"

And it's working fine. Woo! I guess there is a bug in the hardware cursor for the r128 driver. Time to file an upstream bug report.

I am glad you were able to figure this out. I just figured if you were having to hand write an xorg.cong file, you were also contemplating jumping off a bridge  big_smile

I'll just ride it out. I'm sure it will be fine.
