Tint2 launcher icons

There was a discussion about the tint2 launcher icons in the top left of the default panel. I would like to keep the launchers (see that thread for why) but agree they don't blend in too well with the desktop theme.

A Quick Fix is to take phle's advice and tweak launcher_icon_asb. My own preference is:

launcher_icon_asb = 100 -100 -5

This turns off all the colour and turns the brightness down just a bit, while leaving opacity at 100%. On my setup that seems to match the system tray icons on the right hand side quite well. If anyone prefers other values, please post here and we could try to find a good compromise for the BL default config file.
(I like 'launcher_tooltip = 1' too.)

---------------------------------------------------

The Real Fix is to look at the icons themselves. Those four launchers represent the four .desktop files we install for the Bunsen Alternatives:
/usr/share/applications/bl-www-browser.desktop
/usr/share/applications/bl-file-manager.desktop
/usr/share/applications/bl-text-editor.desktop
/usr/share/applications/bl-terminal-emulator.desktop
Their 'Icon=' lines are set to:
web-browser
system-file-manager
accessories-text-editor
utilities-terminal
respectively, because those seemed to be the closest in meaning I could find in the Applications section of the Standard Icon Names (except that there is no generic web browser) so most likely to have an icon available in whatever theme had been set.

Two ways to go from here:
1) The default icon theme set in tint2rc is Faenza-Dark-Bunsen and icon size 24. Dark does not have those icons, but inherits Faenza=Bunsen which does: they are all available in /usr/share/icons/Faenza-Bunsen/apps/24/
Since it's our icon package we are quite entitled to substitute any icons we want for those four. The only one which bothers me personally is web-browser, the others could just be decoloured if necessary. Of course cool-looking BunsenLabs versions of all four application icons would be nice! (In 16  22  24  32  48  64  96  scalable versions...)

2) Rewrite the Icon lines in those .desktop files to point to some other icon location with our custom BL icons for the bl-alternatives. Those had better be scaleable svg files I guess?

1 - Would only work with Faenza-Bunsen icons (or any other icon set we might provide) so if a user changed theme they'd be back with default coloured icons.
2 - Would work independent of icon theme so might clash horribly with something the user had chosen.

Maybe in fact the Quick Fix is the better way to go?
See the tint2 launchers at the top:

Thoughts?

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

I was wondering where those icons came from and why the web browser launcher looked strange, yet familiar.  (Isn't that the icon that Kazehakase used when it was still available in Debian?)

Desaturating the icons does make for a more unified look.  Assuming the systray has a similar option, would the "Quick Fix" keep launcher and systray coherent across icon theme changes?

Desaturating works for some stubborn task and systray icons, too. Just think of terminator, VLC and HPLip.

Yes yes yes, it will give the default desktop a much more sophisticated look, and that is what it is all about isn't it? wink Plus it will in fact give it this little slick touch of cool #!yness. smile

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

About "web-browser"... Faenza's generic web browser icon is a compass (huh?), which I think Safari also uses, but it also contains several branded icons (Iceweasel, Firefox, Chromium, Chrome, Midori, Opera), so the user could switch the generic icon for the branded one if he wants.

Of course, we don't want to ship with the Iceweasel icon for the launcher as it defeats our alternatives system. But I'm also bothered by the compass, probably because the older standard icon themes like gnome-colors, GNOME and Tango used a globe and partly because scaled down to 24x24 it looks like a document icon to me (a stylus or fountain pen).

Faenza doesn't have a globe icon, I guess because a square globe is an oxymoron, but an alternative might be to use /categories/24/applications-internet.png, which is a map with contrails or something over it. Admittedly, it doesn't look all that clear at 24x24 either as the contrails cover everything but Africa at that size, but to me it looks more... Internety.

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

I recently edited my commented_CB11_BL8-rc1.tint2rc (posted elsewhere in these Forums; edits explained in a comment) to include modified values for systray_icon_asb

# full opacity, 60 % greyscale, and somewhat darker
# this dampens the colours for e.g. a present VLC icon,
# but (for better or worse) also dampens any colour used in the battery icon
systray_icon_asb = 100 -60 -10

Regarding the question posed:

I'd say using settings in tint2 (the "Quick Fix" variant) is the better option, as this makes things easily configurable for the end-user,
but that a sort of "Real Fix", i.e. tweaking the actual icons - but not colour-wise - should be put on the agenda as well.

I, too, found it initially difficult to understand what the icon-that-in-reality-represented-the-default-web-browser represented, which is why I vote for launcher_tooltip to
1) be set (it's set in neither CB11 nor BL8rc1)
2) be set to launcher_tooltip = 1 as default.
It's easy to comment out, for those not-wanting-it-but-still-wanting-the-Launcher.

Suggestion for default-web-browser-icon:
Something along the lines of the old Netscape browser's, mixed with NASA's logo
Netscape Navigator 2.02NASA logo
"navigating the web space", sort of ... *uh* (but without animation, of course - sorry about that, in the image above)

For anyone "curious, but too lazy to look it up themselves", I found a similar-looking one ("but round"), with a web-search:
similar to redhat-internet icon

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

Change the web-browser launcher icon...

  • Open Thunar as root and navigate to /usr/share/applications

  • Scroll down to the icon labeled Web Browser (default)

  • Right-click the icon and choose Open With > Open With Text Editor

  • Edit the line Icon=

  • Save the file and restart tint2

Icon=applications-internet
Screenshot_11012015_10_02_37_AM.jpg
Better, no? I bet that would look really good desaturated.

Of course, it's better still when the launcher matches the app you've opened...

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

Thanks!

I've added launcher_icon_asb = 100 -100 -5 to this, but now the browser icon doesn't look like much of anything...

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

Perhaps desaturating an existing icon isn't the way to go after all.
If we had 4 purpose-built icons (for web-browser in particular) in Faenza-Bunsen that matched the grey look of the system-tray stuff, then if users switched to a different icon theme hopefully they'd get things that matched on both sides of the panel, grey or colourful.

Desaturating seems to work fine for icons that actually have a shape with alpha.

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

How about using symbolic icons for the launchers?

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

^I like the idea, but which ones, gnome/Adwaita? I'm looking now, they're too grey to match Faenza'a systray icons. But all 4 icons exist in gnome or Adwaita /scalable/apps, though web-browser-symbolic looks like a power button. tongue

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

Have been thinking about this thread while pursuing my own icon adventure.
First timer with inkscape but made a humble attempt at this browser icon.

Tried to use same colors mostly as the Bunsen theme and tint2 panel
Plus added the bunsen flame to the compass

edit-------
just read hhh's post about the compass / confusion.
agree and does kinda feel safari'ish when I think about it...

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

Nice for first-time inkscape!

Remember, you can't just view it at 96px or whatever, the icons we're talking about are 24px.

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

With inkscape wouldn't you just build it for like the biggest, then scale it down?

Yes, but he posted a large image, I'm just reminding him that at 24px that red flame will look like a smudge.

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

If you do edit the desktop files to give you customized launchers, you'll want to first copy them to ~/.local/share/applications or else a program update will overwrite them.

Scratch that, they don't get recognized that way.

I don't care for the launcher area, but it's easily removed by deleting or commenting out the applicable lines in the tint2 configuration file.

Re: Tint2 launcher icons

@hhh those desktop files belong to us!! (bunsen-configs to be precise)
No other pesky program update will overwrite them.
They can be customized whatever way we want. But that's why I was a little bit hesitant about naming something that called x-terminal-emulator, "BL Terminal Emulator". Seemed a bit presumtuous...

@krunchtime these .desktop files aren't only for the launcher - they also come into play with mime-type file associations, Thunar's "open with" dialogue and any graphic menus users might install.

(btw Tint2 demands a full path to the .desktop file so where it's located doesn't matter.)
