Anyone seen this about Minux running on newer Intel processors ?

Here's the link about this topic. Also there's a link to a really interesting comment webpage made by Google Inc on the subject which I plan exploring further.

The Intel chip on this old box, is likely too dated to be affected( 8yrs or so.) Still think it's a tad disturbing to think so many boxes have a whole OS running lowest level firmware, including a dang web-server !

Questions, comments ... concerns all welcome. Does anyone know if AMD is also engaging in this type of odd behavior in their Cpu's ? Haven't as yet done much googling on the matter.

Vll! Or sheesh make that Vlm! For viva la gnu/Minix. Apparently through hook or crook the most widely used OS on the planet ! tongue

Ah yes, this is cool but also disturbing, it was mentioned over at fdn a while ago.

Almost certainly sad

There is a solution though:

Open source hardware 8)

Thanks Hoas, not surprised you'd be up to speed on the topic too. Had considered dorking around with things like Coreboot or whatever too. Haven't gotten very far as yet on it and if such is built directly into the CPU as well, arghhhhh !

Self quote from a comment on tech privacy/Sec on another forum.

In fact, with so many of our electronics manufactured overseas, by this and that government or who knows who companies. Have often wondered if they come out of the box preloaded with such exploits already, like at the lowest firmware levels. No expert on the topic but can see something like that being difficult even for experts to detect and correct. This is my uber-paranoid side typing. Overall this is filed under my things that go bump in the night and make you go hmmmmmmm section. big_smile

One more, open source being well AMAZING, AWESOME and UNBELIEVABLE stuff that it is, people are even developing open source firmware options, such as coreboot and parallels. Could come a day when you even have the option of having your hardware's lowest level firmware be open source and fully able to be audited. Am sure they have a long way to go and many obstacles to overcome but people are trying.

Thought stuff like this is bound to have been going on quite some time already. Disturbing to have it openly confirmed that such a major player in computing Intel is engaging in such behavior.

Also Hoas ... have you as yet ( or know someone or seen some solid data from people who have) employed the open source to power a systems processor ? Have to wonder about complexity, compatibility and potential performance or borkage issues which may be involved in using it ?

^ Not myself, no, but there are some 32-bit and 64-bit hacker boards available now:

I will probably buy one at some point.

You want to have a bad experience, have a PISSED off screaming RMS show up on your doorstep ! YOU SHALL BE SORRY INTEL ! big_smile
