Hey there,

is 1GB RAM to less to play files larger than 1.5GB in VLC or is it only with .mkv?

Many thanks in advance

Re: [SOLVED] VLC - .mkv file over 1.5GB laggy

^ not sure about the opus audio, but the video codec should be just about manageable on an eeepc, however th eresolution is way too large. yes, that takes more computing power.

imho vlc is not so lightweight, you should try mpv instead, but i wouldn't get my hopes up.
older video codecs in low resolution (not much more than the screens resolution) should be ok.

Re: [SOLVED] VLC - .mkv file over 1.5GB laggy

This file was tinkered by youtube-dl...
maybe you have a tip to adjust my commands in youtube-dl to my specs?!
Thanks for your help

EDIT: in mpv it runs, not smoothly but at least some pictures per second. In VLC were no moving pictures.

Great!
Iĺl do: youtube-dl -f xx --audio-quality 1 ...if it helps^^
Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Would youtube-dl always pic the best quality? ..started doing --format mp4 --audio-quality 1, since some mkv didnt work and since the black sabbath video didnt work (but that was not due to mkv, but because the resolution/quality wasnt able to be managed by my vlc...)

Solved.

For an old computer it's a good idea to grab from YT only the highest quality that your particular computer can handle smoothly. Just my 2 rusty pennies smile

yes, it does that by default.
this is well documented.
there are many tweaks to tell youtube what exactly the end result should be.
maybe the best for you is to only specify the maximum resolution wanted.

PS:
on this old machine, you need to avoid newer video codecs, esp. HEVC a.k.a x265.
