Paper vs Papirus icons

Paper's folder icons are prettier, especially with the default Beam theme, but Papirus is much more complete.

We could ship both and set Paper to inherit Papirus, but would prefer to just include one icon set since icons take a bit of ISO and drive space. We're also looking at creating more icons in Paper via symlinks to existing icons, or maybe merging the 2 sets, but its easier to just follow the developers GIT and leave the maintenance to them.

If you're currently using Paper or Papirus or if you can test one or both for awhile, we'd like your opinions and any issues you run into.

Thanks!

Re: Paper vs Papirus icons

...in particular, do you notice any missing icons or other issues with Paper?

We're thinking (if we decide to go with Paper) of making a package bunsen-paper-icon-theme which would contain just a few icons - the ones Paper lacks or doesn't do to our liking - and then inherits the regular Paper icon theme.

Leafpad is missing, we need to create a symlink named leafpad.png that links to apps/accessories-text-editor.png.

Somebody explain to me all the @2x folders, why the hell are they doing that now? GNOME?

We should check the other available bl-alternatives apps, it would be nice if most of those icons were included.

In multimedia, I've checked vlc, audacious and mpv and they're all included.

Most of the default apps seem fine to me. Not Hexchat, but I don't think that's worth customizing.

Because it wasn't confusing enough yet?  wink

Re: Paper vs Papirus icons

In my stretchbang git I did 'Papirus-GTK-b' which inherits 'Papirus-GTK', but replaces all app icons, and it looks awesome, feel free to borrow. Sad part is that Papirus is svg-ish and this override is png-ish, but that doesn't seem to influence daily use. p.s. No leafpad either.

Explained in Elementary blog (http://blog.elementary.io/post/12419300 … idpi-icons):

If you’ve ever used SVG (or font) icons on the web as a solution for HiDPI, you should be saying that since we ship SVG icons it should be magic and just work. However, at the moment Gtk seems to be built around shipping raster icons. Its default behavior is to work around this by grabbing a larger canvas size. But as illustrated above, this isn’t the behavior we want. It makes our icons look ugly. So what can we do?

Re: Paper vs Papirus icons

^^I'm just wondering: is it just GTK2 or does this affect GTK3 too? Anyone here with HiDPI equipment?

Re: Paper vs Papirus icons

Still off-topic for a second, since we might have to deal with this stuff in our own packages at some point:

elementary blog wrote:

Also make sure the definitions for all of your folders contain proper Min and Max sizes. Min size can be anything (good for making sure icons still scale to fill any gaps you might have), but MaxSize shouldn’t be larger than the next available size you supply. This is important for making this work properly.

Note that neither Paper nor Papirus put those Min and Max sizes in all the @2x scaled folder definitions.

You can change the hexchat icon's color on your own and copy it to your theme folder?
