Hey there,
did the "~/Downloads/canon/pixma_mg5600/scangearmp2-3.00-1-deb/packages$"
so the scanner of Canon MG5600 is usable, but the printer cant be added to printers list.
Canon MG5600 is mentioned but on select it pops up a window saying "searching for drivers" but then does nothing...
Help is much appreciated.

On the support page, there is a separate printer driver package (not scangear!), have you tried to install that yet?
Alternatively, I'm reading that some Canon printers can work over the network, maybe you can try enabling that in the printer's OSD.
Before everything else, you can look and see if the native CUPS interface works better than the dialog: http://localhost:631/admin, click "Add printer", and navigate the wizard (you need to authenticate with the root password, probably). If you decided to try the network printer route, CUPS will inform you about "discovered network printers". Otherwise, select the local printer and continue to the driver selection dialog.

Looks like you were tryng to install an "rpm" package. You need the "deb."

Canon... their driver situation is a mess. *sighs*
On that support site they list Debian as supported system but later on there are only downloads available for RPM-based distributions. No trace of DEB.
Luckily they have DEB packaged drivers available on the German website: https://www.canon.de/support/consumer_p … &language=
Good luck!
