Serving UPnP - general advice please

Hi, all!

Sorry that this isn't strictly about BL, but this is my default community for Linux advice. I've learnt most of what I know about Linux from #!, so hope it's OK to ask.

I want to make my media available over the WAN, but hate Plex, which I gather is "safe". I'd prefer to use Mediatomb, but just opening up a single port isn't safe, I gather. If somebody could explain all this to me in words of one syllable, or refer me to some good reading, I would appreciate it. I am very IT savvy, but from a W****** background, and I clearly have no idea about WAN networking. I have some glaring Linux blindspots.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Serving UPnP - general advice please

please can you explain WAN to me?
not sure what that means, i mean in your case.
what are you trying to accomplish?
something like accessing your media files, stored on your home computer, from your phone, while you're on the move? maybe?

Exactly that, ohnonot. WAN = internet, in my case.

Re: Serving UPnP - general advice please

From the Mediatomb FAQ...

WARNING!

The server has an integrated file system browser in the UI, that means that anyone who has access to the UI can browse your file system (with user permissions under which the server is running) and also download your data! If you want maximum security - disable the UI completely! Account authentication offers simple protection that might hold back your kids, but it is not secure enough for use in an untrusted environment!

Note:

since the server is meant to be used in a home LAN environment the UI is enabled by default and accounts are deactivated, thus allowing anyone on your network to connect to the user interface.

And from the Arch Wiki article...

MediaTomb is an open source (GPL) UPnP MediaServer with a nice web user interface, it allows you to stream your digital media through your home network and listen to/watch it on a variety of UPnP compatible devices.

So it seems like it's meant for a LAN, not a WAN. Do a web search for something like "media sharing over internet linux" and read the more recent articles...
http://www.howtogeek.com/210739/how-to- … ny-device/

I can't remember what I used when I did this a couple of years ago. Now I just rotate albums in heavy rotation to my phone and back.

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Re: Serving UPnP - general advice please

Short story
- My minidlna goes exactly from wheezy box to tv and could also be used to stream audio to android, but that is LAN.
- My ssh goes all over the world, WAN. With an appropriate file manager on android device (What was it called again?) you can browse your media pretty much as if they were uhm there.
- My git(lab) goes around the world as well and it only needs internet for a second (sgit is an example android client) < I use that for txt sharing

So basically you can cover a lot with just this three, but there are N intermediate cases which may require a more specialized solution.

p.s. My apache/wordpress is still running my blog, but that is blocked from public for some time now (half of china was scriptkiding/attacking me).

Re: Serving UPnP - general advice please

If you want WAN access to your media, plex is really the best solution out there that I am aware of. However, back when I did use plex, it tended to be very slow on older hardware and prone to crashing at times.

Given that, I just don't use dlna services any more. sshfs pretty much gives me the same thing without all the media scanning and meta data collection and all that.

this.
i use ES File manager: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr … ?t=2210417 (the evrsion is old, but once installed it upgrades to the new 5.x version, which is necessary for sftp functionality with pubkey and such)

it is not a perfect solution, but it works. i can listen to music & watch episodes.

my next step will be debian in a chroot on android, hopefully that will be perfect (=full sshfs support).

Re: Serving UPnP - general advice please

dinks, am i going in the right direction with this?
because if, i'd like to discuss things further.
if not, i don't want to hijack your thread.
