It all depends on how much you want to put into security, the list is quite large and expensive.
Agreed. At my homestead, I have a polite note glued above granary and woodshed doors. "I don't store fuels here. You can find gas station in the village." My worst nuisance are kids who want to steal gasoline for their mopeds, and I want to save their precious time. In case they want to peek inside anyway, latches are assembled so that they can twist them off with a crowbar without breaking door and frame. Saves me a lot of cleaning and repairing afterwards. They haven't bothered stealing my rusty gardening tools so far.

You can never go wrong with a pitbull with rabies looking after your stuff. While o course, it may decide to eat a bunch of it while you're gone and/or you when you return, still all things considered nobody else will have access to your stuff either. ![]()
Nah for real ... one of the easiest anti-theft tactics which occurs to me is to prominently post security company signs, in the yard, front door etc. Even if you don't actually have an alarm system or service through a Sec company, it's just basic psychology that criminals tend to look for easier targets. So even the implied threat of an alarm system is bound to have an impact. Sheesh, they even sell dummy camera's for cheap. Again they don't actually record anything but still act as a quasi-effective deterrent.

A couple of years ago, burglars visited my neighbour. They took a bunch of tools and two surveillance cameras too.

My personal anti-theft technique is to own as little as possible.

Also helps if the house catches fire.

^ i sometimes have this daydream that i come home from work to a burned-out flat.
the point of the dream is to probe my inner landscape:
how that would make me feel? maybe in some ways even happier than before? could i prove to myself that i'm not attached to my material belongings? do i own little enough?

Ohhhh the irony but I bet the pit-bull with rabies would've still been there. ![]()

Arghhhh, don't know if OP has already gone or not and too lazy to reread the OP. They do make any number of highly affordable deterrents. Though like anything obviously depends on the price range and application. Stuff like klaxons, which have seen used successfully in some highly crime ridden locales. Set off by cheapy motion detectors or any of a number of other means.
Basically idiot violates protected space, massive decibel klaxon alarm goes off. Sure to shake the nerves of many a wanna be thief. Such systems aren't cost prohibitive by any means, guess that could depend upon geography too. Though not here in the states.
Goes w/o saying, a smart thief is going to target highend targets, they know alarms are there and thusly also likely know how to disable such counter-measures but the reward is going to be worth the risk. Whereas with the avg joe, no ... professionals focus on high payoff targets. Robbing joe-blow isn't even worth the risk or effort.
Really something ( like most things in my opinion and experience) to take up with interwebz research. Meaning do your due diligence kinda thing. Though do stand by printing off some "property protected by alarm XYZ security company" signs as one of the most cost effective counter-measures avail .. even if it's a hollow threat. As again ... majority of thieves are going to see those and decide it's better to move onto something easier, rather than bothering with the risk.
Also not that matters, much depends on LE=law enforcement response time in a gazillion scenarios. Some Sec companies actually dispatch their own response, while no doubt many another relies on local law enforcement response to an incident. Which goes w/o saying that in may locals in the US, LE response time can be less than stellar.
ie: Scumbag kicks in door, on avg they can expect a 10min or more window before actual LE personnel have boots on the ground (on scene). Which leaves an uncomfortable period of time for them to steal stuff or worse. All of which is highly dependent of course on location, location, location.
However the aforementioned klaxon is bound to draw more than a tad of attention from neighbors and likely also scare the chit outta such would be thieves. Thus any such buttheads with common sense and self preservation instincts are highly motivated to turn around and get the hades outta dodge, rather than continuing efforts at getting ill gotten gains.
