I have a DELL 1908FP connected to a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 running BunsenLabs Deuterium, with 4 GB of RAM and it works perfectly. However in order to have the DELL monitor working properly I run ARandR, which also works almost perfectly. My problem is, that if I boot up with the monitor connected to the VGA port of the laptop, two black bars will appear on either side of the laptop screen.
I can extend the desktop and move screens around seamlessly. This happens even if the monitor is off and I turn it on, after Openbox is loaded.
The only way I've figured out is to boot up with the VGA cable disconnected from the laptop, and once Openbox is running connect the monitor's VGA cable to the laptop port and launch ARandR.
Is there a way of not having to be connecting and disconnecting the cable from the port. I'm afraid this might damage the port... This same monitor can be permanently connected to my 15" MacBook and I never have to be manipulating the cable from either port.
How can I troubleshoot this? What is this issue called? Don't even know where to start looking into? is this an OS issue? or GRUB, or ARandR?
Unfortunately when I capture a screenshot with shutter of my desktop those black bars don't show up.
Has anyone ever encountered this before? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

have you explored all arandr options?
maybe if you tell it that one of them is the default monitor?
and make sure the script gets executed at startup (maybe bl already does that automagically)?
i take it it's not a video driver issue, since you can get it to work?

The Xorg logs are a good place to start.
