Hello,
I'm trying to install lightworks by the .deb they provide on their website: lightworks downloads page
Using GDebi to install the .deb I run into a problem:
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libjpeg8(>=8c)
libjpeg8 can't be found in the package manager, but I found a link to this when looking through the lightworks forums:
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/amd6 … 8/download
Should I go ahead with that? I'm trying to be cautious about downloading libraries which I'm not entirely sure if they apply to my situation and what they're for.
I'd be grateful for any advice you might give.

You could try, using simulate, to see what damage it might cause, if any.
Have you tried openshot instead?

edit: After some additional research it appears I can't get a good install either.

The libjpeg8 package has been superseded by libjpeg9:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=867047
I don't think you should be using software that depends on obsolete libraries.

There really is no substitute for lightworks though.

@obscurant, anything specific or in general?

Well, I don't think installing the libjpeg8 package from oldoldstable will actually cause any problems per se so if you need the program then go ahead and try it.
Just be sure to backup first

@OP: You might want to mark the package on hold so that it doesn't get flagged for removal or automatically removed, depending on how you perform distro/full upgrades...
sudo apt-mark hold libjpeg8
OTOH, since Lightworks depends on it, maybe it's a non-issue. You should create a post on their forums letting them know they are using an obsolete package.

If they can rebuild against libjpeg9 then that application would be at the minimum be supported for Stretch. For the life of me any commercial software with a deb package should be Debian compliant. Don't try installing Ubuntu debs...too dangerous.

Just generally, I suppose. As far as I know, there's no freeware video editing package on Linux that comes close to the sophistication of Lightworks.

They could also design the package to run standalone (install via a script) and then you wouldn't have to worry about different versions of packages. I use Qoppa PDF Studio and they use built-in Java (for lack of the proper term) so you don't have to worry about Java version conflicts.

Sorry, I've been away from the internet for a while. I went ahead and downloaded it. Nothing bad has happened and lightworks seems to be running smoothly. I'll put a post on their forums in regards to libjpeg9.

^ You could also suggest that they offer an AppImage version.
