Any anti burglar tips?!

Planning to go away for just a few days and was just thinking today, an empty driveway is probably a good hint the house is empty, might be a good idea to ask the neighbour to park one of his cars in my driveway.
I have read abt putting lamps on timers. Any things you do? Jokes are also excepted lol

House contents insurance, back to base alarm system, big brother monitors (for the insurance), safe to keep valuables if you have any.

Myself i have none of this, if they so desperately need what little i have they can have it. I can live without modern convenience like TV's and computers, i just choose to use them. The only thing i would not like to go missing would be family photos, so i keep those in a safe.

Big dogs. I used to live in a neighborhood where almost everyone was broken into, occasionally. I had a 96-lb male Doberman Pinscher; for some reason, my house was never broken into, wink

:8 :8 :8 :8 OH YEA!!!!!!
And the 96lb Doberman is good too!

I've used "timers fot lights" in the past.  Parking a neighbours car is a good idea.

Perhaps some new pets?

Keep the terrarium in the front room where everyone can see it smile

I would prefer to wrestle a 10-stone Rottweiler than go in a room with any of those...

Re: Any anti burglar tips?!

Not a burglar tip, but shut off your water at the main supply shut off.  Otherwise, if a leak develops while you're away, you'll come back to a mess.

Lamps on timers is a good idea.  You could also just leave an interior light on while you're away.  I've done that.

If you still have a landline phone, turn off the ringer.  A ringing phone that isn't answered can be a giveaway that nobody's home.

I once called the police to let them know I would be away.  The officer answering the phone was kind of befuddled and said that the police didn't keep track of when people were away from their home (silly me).  I asked what I could do in case of a break-in then and the officer suggested leaving notes (I used Post-It notes) around the home with a contact number.

If you know someone you trust to be alone in your home/apartment, have them come by periodically to check on things.

If you're in the U.S., you can have the post office hold your mail for a certain period of time.  You can fill out a form online or go to the post office servicing your area and fill out a paper form.  I don't know how post offices in other countries operate for holding mail.

If your home/apartment has a security alarm, arm it when you leave and make sure your contact info is up-to-date in case the monitoring company attempts to contact you.

Actually there are special lamps called FakeTV - just startpage it - which simulate the flickering of a tv screen as burglars protection.

Re: Any anti burglar tips?!

Well, this seems as a nice collection of anti burglar tips.

For equal measure: are there any burglar tips?

Or should I open another thread in "Off topic" for this?

Re: Any anti burglar tips?!

Thanks for the tips and jokes.
Large dogs, well who looks after them for the rest of the year? I don't want to.
I like the idea of letting some snakes loose, but they may just hide away and I have the job of finding them, (probably in my bed) and looking after them. Same with spiders. Maybe lots of cameras with signs saying "constant recording to the internet".

Re: Any anti burglar tips?!

A friend of a friend of mine used a gun powder charge tied to a string above the main door when he went on holidays, so if they broke in through the front door a 12 gauge shotgun charge would go BANG above there heads  big_smile

It all depends on how much you want to put into security, the list is quite large and expensive.

Ive always favoured security roller shutters on my windows and double deadlocked steel framed doors.

Hopefully he did not forget about it when he was returning from holidays.

No he didnt, i opened the door and got the shock of my life!!!

Mind you this was just a charge, like letting of a fire cracker with no fireworks, just all sound and some smoke.

I'm not a burglar, nor I intend to become one.

Apparently, you misunderstood what I meant ... It is much easier to fight burglars if you know what they do and how they do it, instead of guessing, isn't it?  wink   big_smile  big_smile

I kind of like this one. There are a few creative variations as well.
