you must be doing something wrong.
i (and many others) have been using the rules under <applications> for a long while, and never had to resort to these sort of sledgehammer methods... nor did they change for no apparent reason.

edit:
generally speaking i think you're doing well & judging from your other threads, you're getting the hang of customizing through editing plain text files.

Well, perhaps so, and I believe that it's worked flawlessly for others. The cause(s) for my particular issue(s) is inexplicable to me, at least for the moment. I haven't ruled myself out of the equation, that's for sure!
