Re: Hello all

Oh I see. You think I want a windows clone?

I do not. Really I want something interesting that will run reasonably on my netbook.

I wish I could have something like Windows 3.1 maybe, that was my favourite and the first windows distribution that I used. I'd love to have a usable ms-dos style email system. I tried Yahoo in mutt and it's just all over the place!

I remember using 3.1 at work. They had games (solitare, networked hearts) blocked for the whole day except lunch hours (12-2pm) so we easily found a way around it by changing the .ini file settings. Ah, the old days!

I hate anything after XP.

I wonder if it could run Open Live Writer. I have been looking for a replacement for Windows Live Writer for years, I used to use it to write blog posts.

it's either AntiX, or build your DIY from a debian netinst iso, or leave the debianverse and look for greener grass on the other side of the fence (no, not win xp, but rather sth like puppy, gentoo slackware... i could go on and on. your requirements are so common, i'm sure you can find something).

Re: Hello all

I tried bodhi yesterday afternoon.

Unfortunately anything that is based on ubuntu is really painfully slow on my netbook. It took 10 minutes to boot into the live system. Then it was slow and unresponsive.

Also I don't know how Bodhi is meant to look, but on  my netbook it looked like an OS designed for a child. If that is how it really looks then it's not for me anyway. Maybe I have the mentality of a child but I stopped going to playgrounds when I was about 10 smile

Re: Hello all

Did you try out reactos? I have been meaning to give that a go myself, would love to read your opinion on it.

Re: Hello all

I just downloaded and tried reactos and I got (for the first time ever in linux!) a BSOD!

I didn't even think it possible.

Re: Hello all

It seems that it's open source and "windows-like" whatever that means.

I used a live USB, but I googled reactos and bsod and got a lot of hits, some used usb and some cd/dvd.

Re: Hello all

I give it a go myself soon. Does not seem promising though, i would rather linux.

Seems you may be doing fine with debian 9 as main OS though, would that be right?

Hi and thank you. I did not see your recommendations until now.

Do you think any of those would be lighter than Debian 9 (it's what I have now, but I'm getting itchy fingers) or about the same?

I've never been able to get arch running on anything so I'm a bit edgy about installing that.

Hi sorry for the late reply, I couldn't pursue your request earlier for some reasons.
I use Debian or Devuan NETINST, i propose always DIY (Do it yourself) for those who want to make some selfwork so in the end of the day to receive a deserved reward. Having a bare-metal Debian distro much like Arch or Gentoo on a easy scale.

I recommended the mentioned distro above but I do not know much myself, I just read about them from many safe sources that suggest them as lightweight distro. I know pretty much Debian, that i use since a few years, I have a 10 years od hardware that boots just fine on a less secs and use only 20 / 30MB RAM on startup (i686 ofcourse). More or less i use some selective tools, these apps and some other packages have gived to me a great helps for my needs. If you have time and patience, I suggest you Debian NETINST

Regards!
Nili

Debian 9 is okay. I just wanted something a bit more exciting. Previously I had Debian 8, so it's all got a bit samey.

Re: Hello all

I had no luck booting reactos from usb, i use dd to make the usb, how did you do it marianne?

sudo dd bs=4M if=~/Downloads/ReactOS-0.4.5-Live.iso of=/dev/sdb

There are significant differences albeit not those you can see in most cases from debian 8 to 9. A lot of it is under the hood but some are cosmetic also.

I did not use dd on this occasion because I already had a multiboot usb going on with 3 iso's on it. So I just added it to that.

So you had no luck either?

Re: Hello all

So, did you get the BSOD too? I think I had to use GRUB2 to get it to do anything at all.

Re: Hello all

Thank you so much @Nili

I may very well had to go down that route if I can't find anything that works for me.

Re: Hello all

Tails worked: https://tails.boum.org/

No surprise as it's built on debian...
