[SOLVED] Hiding a folder regardless of OS
Hello,
Is there a way to hide a folder regardless of the OS?
Right now, using an external hard drive, when I try hiding my passwords folder for Linux, I realised that it’ll appear on Windows or Mac (and vice versa). This, as you can imagine, kind of defeats the purpose…

True, this would certainly work but I was looking for something simpler, such as combining the .folder (Linux), the hidden folder property (Windows) and...whatever it is for Mac.
If no such simple solution exists though, I will indeed encrypt the disk to protect my folder as you suggested.

For Windows, you can make it a hidden system folder with the attrib command - https://www.howtogeek.com/104825/make-a … -software/
Although that wouldn't stop a savvy Windows user. Don't know if/how that would keep a Mac user from seeing it.
Instead of encrypting the entire disk, maybe make a small partition and encrypt that, or only allow your user access.

Thank you for the suggestion, I had forgotten that one can encrypt a small partition only! As for the savvy Windows user, this is something I had overlooked. I think the best solution for me would be to encrypt locally, as you suggested.

I've been using veracrypt, it works really well on Linux, with a fancy gui etc.
It's available for many different OSs, I guess that also means the encrypted files are compatible between OSs?

With veracrypt I think you can also create a sort of encrypted archive.
Just don't lose your encryption password. I'd write it down if I were you.

I too can vouch for VeraCrypt, interestingly in Debian from Stretch onwards, VeraCrypt containers and partitions can be opened and mounted using native tools (cryptsetup), the version in Bunsen is too old and can only handle TrueCrypt stuff, no VeraCrypt mode.
