The weird thing about that article is that problems only usually happen in Arch if you *stop* updating regularly hmm

@OP: I had my family on Arch for a while and it was actually extremely reliable but I had to `-Syu` every ****ing day and I got sick & tired of re-jigging the configurations at every major verion bump; they're now on Debian stable and my life is *much* easier.

Re: Operating system for a non techy Mum

I suppose Arch would not be a good idea being rolling. Maybe better to stick with Debian Xfce.

Thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated.

yes, it's not very accurate.
but i just love how they take well-known forum dweller clichés and make pseudo-journalism out of it...

Re: Operating system for a non techy Mum

Ok so mum finally shipped her old laptop to me, im in the process of shredding the 300 GB HD of windows.

After much thought i think i should install bunsenlabs and possibly add the xfce4 panel, put in some handy faves in the menu and a few on the panel plus some on the desktop. I dont think there is much use in me installing something i dont know and that is not stable. Rolling would be a no go and from what i read old stable will be supported until 2020.

Im pretty sure i could make Bunsenlabs mum friendly.

Bunsenlabs & Linux Mint

I'm trying to make a Linux user my friend. I hope to reach him on Linux smile
I'll install BunsenLabs on his system, If he opposes me, I will try it with Linux Mint.

Corrected spell of Linux 8o

Re: Operating system for a non techy Mum

Good luck Nili smile

Bunsenlabs Hydrogen installed fine on mums laptop, all working good.

I decided to install the LXDE desktop as it seems a bit more user friendly than openbox and the panel is easier to configure ootb than xfce panel. Lightweight too which suits this laptop. Tried to make it a bit windows like.

Hopefully their is no bad reactions with installing lxde desktop with bunsenlabs, so far all i have had to change in settings is autostart compton for transperancy effects.

Re: Operating system for a non techy Mum

nice.
i like the "variation on win xp" big_smile

ps: brontosaurusrex made a wallpaper inspired by the old win xp default.

also, how is this:

going for you?
i remember that lxde's configuration differs significantly from a standard openbox setup, which caused me grief at some point...

Re: Operating system for a non techy Mum

Yeah i thought an xp look would be in order. The win7 she had on the HDD was beyond saving, blue screened 5 seconds into boot screen, so i used mini xp from hirens boot cd to retrieve all the photos and files and installed linux and the laptop has a new lease of life wheras mum was thinking the computer was no good, nope just microsoft mum.

Lxde Seems to be going ok. I just told mum not to touch any files that she doesnt know what they mean ie; leave the file system alone!

She hardly uses a computer anyway but when she does she just wants to use a web browser mostly, save pdf and photo files to documents etc.

@Steve Nice configuration! It's a great choice as it looks like an easy to use desktop.

Btw where did you find that nice wallpaper? I'm wondering where that picture may come from.

how many times i heard/experienced this!
on one hand, good for me: don't contradict, tell them you'd like to use it for tinkering, install linux => profit!
on the other hand: our planet is drowning in cast-off electronic devices!

Yep E waste is quite the issue these days but there are dedicated e waste companies who try to recycle and re use much of it, but there would have to be a large percentage that gets trashed rather than re used or recycled.
