Open a terminal and run this command:

journalctl -xf

Then click on the icon & make it crash and post any new output that shows up in the terminal window.

Surprisingly enough, I couldn't reproduce the issue when launched the nm-applet from terminal, or when executed the

journalctl -xf

command either.

Without concrete error output it is very difficult to troubleshoot problems.

Is there any possibility that your router could be failing?

I don't have any router. I'm using Internet just with a modem which uses a normal GSM SIM to connect to the net. But I'll try to reproduce the issue anyhow. Until then I won't mark this as solved.

It might not be theme spcific for I have faced this issue while using different desktop e.g. MATE with Ambiance, Xfce, default MATE, ClearLooks with openbox+tint2, etc.

Re: nm-applet crashes when clicked on it

I succeeded crashing nm-applet for both instances: after running jounalctl-xf and running nm-applet from terminal. But neither did show any error message. While launching nm-applet from terminal though, nm-applet that was there after startup crashed, not the one started from terminal. Any thoughts?

Sorry, but these seem to say the opposite? hmm

Do you get crashes if you try without the modem attached?

Stop using NetworkManager.

What are the specifics of your networking requirements?

I tried this without modem attached a few times, and nm-applet didn't cause. It's the modem specific problem?

My requirements:
1. Using mobile broadband Internet through a modem.
2. Creating WiFi Hotspot (preferred).
That's all for now. It's not like NetworkManager is creating a big problem for me, but I'd like to try other options if they could offer me the same functionality (features), if not better.

Looks like it, doesn't it?

As HoaS said, try with an alternative network tool.
