Menus - Any idea of lightest option?

Hey there!

After reading the very useful post at Dynamic menus on BunsenLabs, I was wondering is there any information (just if anyone has any idea) about which of those options uses up fewer resources (mainly, but not only, less RAM)?

I'm sort of undecided between the Debian menu (I tried to install it, but it seems I did something wrong, maybe I'll try again), Obamenu and jgmenu, just because they seem to be the simplest/lightest. But, of course, I may have gotten that impression wrong. As a tie breaker, I'll go for the lightest one, even f it is not the simplest (as long as it's simple enough for me to handle).

For the moment, I'm using Docky, but that uses up to 60-70MB of memory, which I can afford in this machine, but not on the other one I'm using BL in (it's an Asus EeeePC, with 2GB of RAM, but the Atom 900 processor gets to be a limiting factor before RAM does, duh, should've seen that coming). I'd much rather have only one menu with everything (and the same in all machines I use) and I really like the simple openbox menu (too bad it's static), so I don't mind if there are no icons.

Thank you for any hint.

Cheers!

Other than not being updated automatically, what don't you like about the stock openbox menu that comes with BunsenLabs?  The whole of openbox itself is only consuming 6.5mb of RAM on my system.

Hey KrunchTime!

What I would like to change by adding another menu, in relation to the BLOB menu, is that it is difficult (or rather time consuming) to update manually and some applications (not many, these may be the exceptions) do not seem to start correctly from the menu.

I like its appearance and the fact that it is simple and lightweight.

That's why I am asking about these other options, most of he ones I mentioned add a menu item to the BLOB menu, instead of creating a new one (which is redundant, just like Docky is).

The system starts here with something around 200MB. In the EeeePC, it starts at about 70MB.
(Well, I'm saying this by memory, but the real values must be around these.)

^ BTW, "BLOB" is the theme manager, in Menu -> Accessories wink

The Debian menu is simple to set up: http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Menus#The_Debian_menu. Don't forget to run 'sudo update-menus' after installing an application.

Well, I used it to refer to the BunsenLabs OpenBox menu (BLOB menu). Will pay more attention next time and use blobmenu ou something like that. Or maybe I should stop being lazy when typing... But Bradypus is a sloth...

hummm... would that be the cause for new applications not showing?
I missed the sudo part.

will try again!

Thanks!

Nops. installed codeblocks IDE and it did not show.

Let's try the next one on the list.

Thanks again!

Also, you should make sure you have the following packages installed before running update-menus:

    menu-xdg

...and does codeblocks create a .desktop file for the menu to use?

Yes, I just went there to check. It's right there in /usr/share/applications.

Is there 'show last n apps installed' pipe menu in bunsen? And would such thing solve your problems?

I like to use ps_mem to check memory consumption for individual programs:

Re: Menus - Any idea of lightest option?

When deciding the best menu for you, have a look at the bl version of the obmenu-generator here. If you try it, pls. report back the memory usage, I'll add it to the menu-guide.
The menu is the same as the out-of-the-box menu, but it has dynamic menus. If you don't want to switch back, you won't need switch-menu. The menu by bl-obmenu-generator without icons is lightning fast and also easy to customize.
As for low ram: You might want to test the XFCE menu too (easy to install, simply pasting one line in menu.xml).

Re: Menus - Any idea of lightest option?

Thanks, Martix!

I'll try those two. Obmenu-generator looked more complicated and I left it for last. But your description is definitely encouraging!

I'm trying Obamenu and it seems OK, so far. I'll try to check memory usage though. It's just a python script, shouldn't use much, but then, again, it seems like it runs form scratch everytime I click on the "Applications" menu item.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions!

C

Thanks, Head_on_a_Stick, I'll definitely check that out!

Especially since it can be installed via pip, which makes everything so much easier!
