Debian 9 Stretch release

After 26 months of development the Debian project is proud to present its new stable version 9 (code name "Stretch")

https://lists.debian.org/debian-announc … 00003.html

https://www.debian.org/News/2017/20170617

Full release notes here:

Any users attempting a `dist-upgrade` from jessie to stretch (in a pure Debian system) are strongly advised to carefully study the official advice beforehand:

https://www.debian.org/releases/stretch … ng.en.html

There are many caveats and gotcha's to be avoided but most upgrades should proceed smoothly if the guidelines are followed.

The (unofficial) ISO images that contain the non-free firmware required by most wireless cards can be found here:

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof … ch/iso-cd/

The team is working hard on the BunsenLabs Helium release that will follow in due course.

Any enterprising h4x0rs who want to test-pilot an experimental version ("Helium-dev") and help us in our development can use the Debian stretch ISO image to install a (CLI-only) system and then boot that and run our bunsen-netinstall script:

https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-ne … helium-dev

A more flexible installation method is covered by this guide:

https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=3800

Thanks for testing!

^ Whoops...beat me to it.  I posted a similar announcement in the BL & General Linux Discussion forum.

Re: Debian 9 Stretch release

firmware-9.0.0-amd64-i386-netinst.iso +  https://github.com/bunsenlabs/bunsen-ne … dev.tar.gz = error

install fails with missing file: bl-github-upgrade

Net install script is clear enough to trace problem to the necessary_files array check. Removing bl-github-upgrade from   bunsen-netinstall/config allowed bunsen-netinstall to complete successfully.

I installed this in KVM and ended up spending more time trying find out how to get auto window resizing to work which seems to be a long standing bug in spice-vdagent.

From the little testing I have done, Bunsen Helium seems to be OK, but I don't have any real hardware I can try this on and have yet to run bl-welcome.

Re: Debian 9 Stretch release

Thanks for the bug report @Krisbee.

The bl-github-upgrade bug has now been fixed and pushed to GitHub.

The helium-dev installer is not yet really ready - maybe a week or two for something nearer usable - and bl-welcome needs a lot of recoding, so will take a bit longer.

Re: Debian 9 Stretch release

Congrats Ma' Deb! Hmm Helium should be interesting then... Since playing around with it on my 'toy box', admittedly from  narrow use cases, it seems very solid!  Thanks for your effort JohnRaff, and likewise, we've waited 26 months...so I think we can wait a bit longer for our official Bunsen spinoff release.
