[SOLVED] Using rox-desktop in Bunsenlabs

I understand Rox is fairly ancient and not really maintained, but I like the look and feel of it. My question is, is it feasible - meaning can a newbie do it - to install it and have it as the default desktop manager? Can you guys foresee any dramas using it in Bunsenlabs?

Try installing https://packages.debian.org/jessie/rox-filer — that is the core component of the desktop and you may find an option in LightDM's (the login screen) session selector after you install it.

Otherwise see http://rox.sourceforge.net/desktop/Debian.html

I haven't tried any of that on my BL systems though.

Cheers for that. I just had a play with it and it doesn't mesh and play well with BL so I've reverted it. I guess what looks good on the various Puppies doesn't always apply to other distros. smile

That is par for the course for such a unmaintained package. I used RoxFiler on an AntiX system and it seemed kind of clunky. Using PCManFM now  (sometimes Thunar) and not looking back.

seriously, it is extremely fast, and rock solid.
i've tried it a while ago.
if you installed the file manager, you most probably also have the desktop manager.
it will take some fiddling in ~/.config/openbaox/autostart to get it all going.

both file manager and desktop take some getting used to. it's not my cup of tea, but it definitely works, and after some customisation and some adapting of usage habits, it might be quite beneficial to one's workflow.

roxterm usually comes separately, and it is a very good (fast, lightweight, solid) gui terminal emulator.

Yes, Rox got rather fiddly to get right, and Roxterm was solid but too bad it's developer stopped maintaining it and now it is dropped from Debian.
