I am running BL Deuterium and installed mutt-patched today.
mutt-patched -v
tells me that it is based on mutt 1.5.23, while mutt.org says the latest version is 1.8
Immediate problem: In mutt, when I select an email with <enter> to open it, I get this error "Could not create temporary file!" I don't know if this is an easy fix, or just one of many problems to come, since Debian only provides this older version of mutt.
Should I:
(1) Try to figure out this "temporary file" error in mutt?
(2) Remove mutt-patched and install mutt 1.8.3 from source, risking some dependency problems with my stable BL system, but probably getting a better experience from mutt?
Thanks.

There was an old bug that looked similar:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=610191
But that was fixed for 1.5.21-4 so your version should be OK.
Do you have this problem with the stock mutt package?
The version in the repositories is old because we are based on Debian stable and the new release is due out this Saturday so everything is just about as old as it can be.
However, this does not mean that the packages are too old to be useful and most *major* bugs should have been taken care of by now; please read https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian … f_Syndrome for more.
Having said that, compiling from source should be fine (it won't risk dependency problems, that happens when mixing repositories) but a better option would be to backport version 1.8 from sid yourself, guide here:
