EDIT:
NOTE: I have had problems with PA since #! days. It did not work OOTB - I now have ALSA sound working.
This thread continues to try and find out why PA does not work on my machine.
===== End Edit =====
OK, I installed the new "Deuterium" build. I have no sound.
Speakers? I have no speakers speakers...
Sony Headphones; 9mm jack plugged into the jack for speakers
I was asked if I had sound in a live session: Nope not there either. DEAD SILENCE.
I have never had PulseAudio work on my machine. Not since it was first introduced in #! I have always managed to get it out and use plain ALSA.
I can't do that here, I tried this from the #! Forum:
Today is my lucky day. I finally found out how to completely remove pulseaudio from system.
sudo killall pulseaudio sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils gsntreamer0.10-pulseaudio paman pavumeter pavucontrol sudo mv /etc/asound.conf /etc/asound.conf-bak rm ~/.pulse-cookie rm -r ~/.pulse
Reboot. Then install:
sudo apt-get install alsa-base alsa-tools alsa-tools-gui alsa-utils alsa-oss alsamixergui libalsaplayer0 volumeicon-alsa
After next reboot you will get normal sound without distortion, cracking noises and wasted CPU.
PS Happy New Year everybody!
PSS Even skype started working properly. The only problem - xfce4-volumed doesn't like the absence of pulseaudio very much, but I think I will find a way around it.
Had to modify it a bit for things like:
rm ~/.pulse-cookie
rm -r ~/.pulse
that don't exist here.
The end result is NO PulseAudio exists here, ALSA is in, the way it was previously (or I think it is) and still no sound. So I guess not the way it was before.

Any help getting ALSA working would be appreciated.
Try:
sudo apt purge pulseaudio
sudo mv /etc/asound.conf{,.bak}
sed -e '/bl-start-pulseaudio-x11/ s/^/#/' -i ~/.config/openbox/autostart
But can you please put PulseAudio back first so we can try to find out why it's not working?

^It looks as if you're using the Deuterium setup without the Deuterium openbox/autostart.
Some things were changed in autostart to make Pulse audio work, among other things.
You could try making a backup of your current ~/.config/openbox/autostart (presumably inherited from your previous system), copying /usr/share/bunsen/skel/.config/openbox/autostart to ~/.config/openbox/autostart, and reversing any system changes you made after installing Deuterium. If audio then works, then you can import any custom settings you need from your backed-up autostart.
If audio still doesn't work, then it would be interesting, to say the least, to find out why...

OH MY! I've been using that "autostart" file since #! with no PA ... also through the last two years with BunsenLabs; no PA, but now it looks like a must.
So I copied the PulseAudio section in just above where it should be:
## Start PulseAudio
## (This replaces /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop
## which is disabled by ~/.config/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop.)
## NOTE: PulseAudio must be started before volumeicon
bl-start-pulseaudio-x11
### qasmixer ###
## qasmixer -t & ## removed
volumeicon &
Which at this point will not do anything as PA has been purged as stated in the OP.
What I wanted was ALSA working ... but let's see if we can get PA back in since that seems to be the way others want things to go.

Could you, perhaps, just to make things simpler, temporarily copy in the whole autostart file from the path I posted above? (Of course, making a backup of your personal file.) It depends on other things, and the order they appear and so on. Having your personal settings in there will make it much harder to debug.
Once audio is fixed, then you can put back your custom settings, one at a time, making sure none of them break anything...

Not sure it's going to be simpler, there are things that don't apply here:

OK I have sound. None of the above worked. BUT, I thought of one little program I used with #!, it looked much nicer and followed the theme I was using so I installed it configured iit exactly the way I used then and BINGO - Sound

Installed: qasmixer and configured it like this:
Now to reboot and see it it's still good.

^ If just installing qasmixer and fiddling with the settings fixed things then you *did* have working sound with ALSA before, it was just muted 8)
With the original autostart - no sound.
Yes, that's because you have deleted /etc/asound.conf
It would be great if you could re-install PulseAudio, make sure that the current autostart file is in use and then create a file at /etc/asound.conf with the following content:
pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
type pulse
}
The sound should then work after a reboot (you may have to fiddle with the volume levels and unmute the master channel).
Offline
@S11 of course it's great that you have sound, but if you have the time to spare then it would be in the interest of the project if we could find out why it wasn't working with PA, and if there's anything we can do to make PA work, not just for you but maybe other users too.

OK, I'm in "s67"* an OOTB - BL-D install. Originally I had installed my ~/ to BL-D so yes that overwrote the openbox autostart file. Not the case here.
--- this post is basically an historical timeline of events that promped my OP.
This install has just a couple of tweaks to help me here, now:
stuff copied to ~/
- ~/bin (original was empty)
- ~/.bashrc --> nothing on the BL .bashrc concerns pulseaudio
- ~/.mozilla, and
- I installed inxi
- - - - ~/bin and ~/.bashrc gives me my aliases I am comfortable with and ~/.mozilla my FF setup and links. Other than that PURE OOTB BL-D
DEAD SILENCE!
VLC should be plauing one of the funniest records of all times. Look for it on YouTube - you will not be disappointed.
Clicked on the Volume Icon to see settings - never seen that program befor and went through all the config options: no sound.
So I installed alsamixergiu and the only thing it sees is "Pulse".
--- end of Historical timeline
So as per OP I ripped PA out of that install and tried what I did at #!. It still didn't work - until I installed qasmixer.
If you need more info I'll be happy to boot into s67 and have at it.
No Sound

You can try this:

And give the following command:

Install boot override and reboot, and act on pavucontrol or else
I'm guessing this is with PulseAudio because of the "pavucontrol" you mentioned?
I have removed PA.
But that looks good. and a tweak to keep! I clicked on show unconnected pins and they all showed up.
Interesting - because I now have sound.

No sound in BL-D Live DVD
Please open up pavucontrol and select the second analogue card as the default output (in the "Output Devices" tab) to see if that produces sound.
Please also post the output of
cat /proc/asound/cards
aplay -l
amixer
From your system with qasmixer and working sound.
