Re: FF-ESR 45.9.0 Crashing ... [waiting for the next one]

Going to respectfully disagree with this too. If getting it right, yeah ff-esr gets security fixes. So do the release versions. However if getting it right esr doesn't get any potential performance enhancements the release versions do.

Also honestly don't get this massive obsession with oh my gawd, security, security, security. Been using gnu/Nix for what ? Going on like 7yrs religiously now and have NEVER, not ever ... not once, had my web browser compromised by anything.

I don't run it sand-boxed, don't run it chrooted etc so forth. Mentioned in terms of popularity people want new versions of browsers. Just me but I find that totally understandable too. Anyway, just 2 pointless cents, it's gnu/Nix and of course any nixer is well within rights to decide what's right for them.

For me, preference will always remain latest release version of Firefox. Perhaps give people the option too ? Mentioned in another thread, no prob for folks to get latest Chrom/ium, or Opera or anything else browser-wise on stable but FF ... nope. At least was never that way with #!. Haven't checked among the other stable based distro's ( and likely will just to see.) Some them could be offering latest FF release in repos ?

Glad Debian finally came to it's senses and started calling Firefox, Firefox again. Arghhhhh ! Personally would like to see a Debian stable based distro come out with a pre-tweaked Firefox for that matter. Rather than the highly conservative way it tends to come ootb. Again though, that's just my babblings on this junk.

Update: Nope, according to distrowatch, that's a big negatory folks. Oh well, life goes on + world keeps spinning. tongue

Re: FF-ESR 45.9.0 Crashing ... [waiting for the next one]

I've run the gauntlet with having the latest of (insert program), I ran SID for a year and a half and borked it in a moment of OOPS! on the keyboard. In the past I've used pure up to date FF like BLizg.

So been there done that have found what I want/need in Debian Stable.

I'm at the point that stable is what works for me, it also maintains peace with S12.
And if not I'll us a backport.

99% of the programs in Debian Stable do a LOT more than I use them for OOTB, most of them with options I don't even know about.  So if all these 'Stable' programs do what I need/want them to do - Why upgrade?

Conky is probably the only one I stretch a bit.
{BLizg put those tomatoes and rotten eggs down please! lol }

Debian 12 Beardog, SoxDog and still a Conky 1.9er

If you're happy with things the way they are Sector, then there's no reason for you to upgrade fellow nixer. No worries. smile

Re: FF-ESR 45.9.0 Crashing ... [waiting for the next one]

Actually, I think the current Debian stable ESR version will be the last using 45.*

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/o … tions/faq/

From the "What does the Mozilla Firefox ESR life cycle look like?" diagram, that is the last version of that series before the jump to 52.*

So the next version bump in jessie & stretch should be to the 52.* version that is currently in experimental.

Then just another year with Flash working before 59.* comes out...

Hopefully before the big plugin (and extension) apocalypse that's coming with FF 57 and later, we should be able to dump Flash hopefully when site developers are convinced HTML5 is the way of the future. Even Microsoft is planning to deprecate Flash in some later update to their Edge browser. Also Java plugin will be gone for good once FF ESR 52 is EOL'd.
