I use this method:
sudo -i cat bl.iso > /dev/sdX sync exit
Replace X with the letter assigned to the USB stick
(plug in the drive and run `dmesg|tail` )
*do not* use a partition number.
@ HoaS Cheers ,
with a bit of directory navigation to my Hydrogen-64.ISO
and a few tweaks with gparted
created my first working bootable hybrid image usb ,(1G)
using my BunsenLabs install .
(No more torturing my poor CD/DVD writer )
Like safer ' dmesg |tail '... just USB , no Hard-disks to confuse things !
... Persistence is usefull ! (Alt-r my new friend)

Success.. that is I tried the USB installer Etcher which also runs in Linux.
Now the installer mounts the 'CD' and continues the installation.
This is the solution. Thank you!
