So upon waking my machine from sleep I get a dialog box asking for my password - to put the machine back to sleep.
If I cancel the dialog the screen goes black and accepts no input. I have to disconnect the AC adapter from my laptop and remove the battery to reboot.
How do I fix this issue? Thanks.

You first look at your systemd journal, Xorg.0.log, .Xsession-errors, for any pertinent information.
Can you open a tty and manually log in?

How do you put your machine to "sleep"?
Does this method allow a normal recovery:
systemctl suspend
Have you tried disabling the screenlocker?

Try pressing <Return> then enter your user password then press <Return> again.
EDIT: why is this thread in Help & Support (Other)?
Which operating system are you using?

I"ll look later today.
The OS is BL Hydrogen.
No I can't ctrl alt f4 5 6 7 etc to a new shell.
How do I put my machine to sleep? Like any other laptop. I close the lid.

No, that's a Power Manager setting. I have mine set to lock the screen on close. Other xfce4-power-manager options are "Hibernate" and "Switch off display".
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

OK I get that.
The questions is why does it ask for my password to put the system to sleep- after resuming from sleep?
It goes like this.
I close the lid.
System goes to sleep. Verified by looking at the sleep LED on the outside of my Thinkpad.
Open lid, login
System asks for password to back to sleep.
If I enter the password, it goes to sleep. If I don't it goes to a useless black screen. I've never had this behaviour from BL on my other Thinkpads.

You first look at your systemd journal, Xorg.0.log, .Xsession-errors, for any pertinent information.
Can you open a tty and manually log in?
So which file do you want? I know diddly about systemd but I found this: https://www.freedesktop.org/software/sy … .conf.html
Regarding tty login - Nope. Once the screen goes black I literally cannot do anything. The only thing left to do is pull the ac adapter out and remove the battery which forces a system shutdown. Pressing and holding the power button for 5-7 seconds sometimes will turn the machine off, from which I can reboot.
Right, sorry to be pedantic.
So, what were you able to find in the logs?
Have you tried with light-locker removed?
Besides what I just provided, do you want any other logs? What's light-locker (I think my question will tell you if it's removed )
So wait, when you open the lid, after it was sleeping, you're prompted to login from lightdm right? Then once you're back in the openbox session, what program is it that prompts you again? Does this happen only from an X session or does it happen from a TTY as well?
1. Yes
2. I don't know what program it is. It's a GUI element that says the system needs authentication to sleep.
3. Not understanding this. So you want me to open my lid and ctrl+alt+f(any), drop to tty and login and see if it happens?
You guys keep asking about tty logins. 99% of the time I never login to the console, just via lightdm and straight to openbox. I understand switching to another console session and it does come in handy. But no, once it's gone to a black screen I cannot do anything on the system other than try to force a shutdown via power button press and hold, or to deprive the system of any power input.
Thanks for the help so far.

apt-cache policy light-locker
sudo apt-get purge light-locker
When you're not able to get to the desktop, try Ctrl-Alt-F1, login and sudo pkill lightdm

I don't have an xorg.log file
Yes, you do
Whenever I need to find something out I use https://www.startpage.com/ — in this case typing "where do I find my xorg log?" into the search bar gives this very useful link as the top result:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/26525/wh … le-located
Hope this helps
Regarding tty login - Nope. Once the screen goes black I literally cannot do anything.
Sorry to be pedantic but did you actually try my suggestion:
Try pressing <Return> then enter your user password then press <Return> again.
do you want any other logs?
Apart from Xorg.0.log, the systemd journal may have some hints but you will have to enable persistent logging by editing the file at /etc/systemd/journald.conf (as root!) and changing this line:
Storage=persistent
Remember to remove the comment ("#" symbol) at the start of the line
Once this is done, the logs from the previous boot can be read with:
sudo journalctl -b -1
You could upload them to https://paste.debian.net/ and post the link here if you want.
What's light-locker
Please read the ScreenLocker HowTo (to which I have already linked in my earlier post) to understand how the screenlocker is supposed to work in BunsenLabs.
I cannot do anything on the system other than try to force a shutdown via power button press and hold, or to deprive the system of any power input.
If this happens again and the user password does not unlock the screen, please try Alt-SysRq rather than a hard power cycle:
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debi … _sysrq_key
I think there may be a conflict between systemd and NetworkManager xfce4-power-manager here, this would help narrow things down:
Does this method allow a normal recovery:
systemctl suspend
Also, can we see the output of:
systemd-inhibit
Finally, since this seems to be a graphical problem, can we identify your hardware?

apt-cache policy light-locker
sudo apt-get purge light-lockerWhen you're not able to get to the desktop, try Ctrl-Alt-F1, login and sudo pkill lightdm
When this happens to me, the system is non-responsive to any input. I've even tried hooking up an external keyboard when this happened again last night.

Try pressing <Return> then enter your user password then press <Return> again.
Yes, I did do this. The system went to sleep. Which it should since the dialog box is requesting permission to just that.
If this happens again and the user password does not unlock the screen, please try Alt-SysRq rather than a hard power cycle:
I don't think were communicating in the same language.
I can bash the keyboard all day long in any combination and nothing happens. I've stated this multiple times (maybe no tin those exact words). Secondly, the keyboard on T430s does not have a sysrq key so I couldn't push it even if I wanted to.

apt-cache policy light-locker
sudo apt-get purge light-lockerWhen you're not able to get to the desktop, try Ctrl-Alt-F1, login and sudo pkill lightdm
Thanks. I removed light locker.
I just discovered thanks to HoaS that IF my keyboard had a sysrq key I could use sysrq+alt+r to get keyboard function back. But since Lenovo in their stupidity removed it from the new keyboard design on 3rd generation and new laptops, I can't do that.
So now I guess I have to find some weird nix voodoo to remap some other key to pretend to be sysrq just so i can get my keyboard to work.
This is getting laughably insane. I just want sleep to work like it should.
I do appreciate everyone's help though. Thank you.

How do you put your machine to "sleep"?
Does this method allow a normal recovery:
systemctl suspend
Have you tried disabling the screenlocker?
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=2080
If I cancel the dialog the screen goes black and accepts no input
Try pressing <Return> then enter your user password then press <Return> again.
EDIT: why is this thread in Help & Support (Other)?
Which operating system are you using?
Yes, systemctl worked fine. (I already removed light locker).
OS Uname-a output
Linux Samsara 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.39-1+deb8u2 (2017-03-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Also I think just got what your getting. So when the screen goes black you want me to attempt a normal login. Gotcha.
Now why would that work if I can't drop to another console / tty shell by doing ctrl_alt_f2 or f3 or any f? (Which doesn't work for me when this happens anyway).

No but you do have a line with the Storage= key, don't you?
Read the output of this command and see if you can fit the pieces together yourself:
man journald.conf
systemctl worked fine
In which case, disable the screen handling in xfce4-power-manager by using:
xfce4-power-manager-settings
Then let systemd handle suspending the device on lid closure, it should do this automatically but if not then edit the file at /etc/systemd/logind.conf with reference to
man logind.conf

So should I do this (disable the screen handling in xfce4-power-manager) also or wait and see if the journald.conf edit fixes it?

I edited my journald.conf file. Does this look correct?
Yes, that will enable a persistent journal and allow you to view the log for a previous boot — you should now have a folder at /var/log/journal which contains these.

To be clear(er): the journald.conf edit just allows you to view the logs from a previous boot, it doesn't actually fix anything.
I think that the problem here is caused by xfce4-power-manager and systemd attempting to manage suspending the machine on lid closure and conflicting.
The journal should (hopefully) show exactly what is happening.
I think that disabling xfce4-power-manager's handling of suspend on lid close and leaving that job to systemd alone (configured through /etc/systemd/logind.conf) will fix the problem, please try that.

Next time I boot into BL I will post the log and also disable the xfce4-power-manager.
I'm remoted into an exchange server at the moment.
