[Resolved] Bunsenlabs Releases

I'm working independently and contracting my services to a company developing a web site. Their development is done on Ubuntu and they want me to convert over. I am refusing for a few reasons which I will skip since it is not relevant here.

The company is more or less ok with my staying on Bunsenlabs, but it has one legitimate question that I can not answer. Their opinion is that ubuntu is a good choice because of it's commitment to have a new release periodically (the company said ubuntu is committed to a major release every 2 years). The company's question to me was, "How often will Bunsenlabs have a release?"

So I checked here at the Bunsenlabs webpage. I may have missed it, but I could not see any plans for the next major release beyond Hydrogen. Is it Helium?

Does anyone have a pointer to this information?  If is is not available, does anyone have information to share?

Re: [Resolved] Bunsenlabs Releases

BL is intended to be based on Debian Stable, so the current release is BL Hydrogen, based on Debian Jessie. There is a point-release called Deuterium, which you will find references to in this forum section.

The next release will be BL Helium, based on the next Stable ie Debian Stretch. There are no plans to have an equivalent of Ubuntu LTS.

Re: [Resolved] Bunsenlabs Releases

Thank you for the information. It is indeed helpful. Permit me to follow up with another question and a suggestion.

The next release will be BL Helium, based on the next Stable ie Debian Stretch

I infer from this that the intent for BL is to provide a release after each stable Debian release. A fair conclusion?

Just my opinion, but this information should be provided on the Bunsenlabs main page, or at least referenced from if it.

For example, the main pages says:

BunsenLabs Linux is a distribution offering a light-weight and easily customizable Openbox desktop. The current release is Hydrogen1, derived from Debian Jessie. The project is a community continuation of CrunchBang Linux.

but could be reworded:

BunsenLabs Linux is a distribution offering a light-weight and easily customizable Openbox desktop. The release schedule follows releases of stable Debian releases. The current release is Hydrogen1, derived from Debian Jessie. The next release, Helium1, derived from Debian Stretch, is targeted for summer of 2017 [or whatever specific or vague time is appropritate]. The project is a community continuation of CrunchBang Linux.

An alternative would be to publish a 'news' article which provides information on the Helium release. This article could then be found by selecting the 'news' link on the main page. The article would provide the best guess at a time frame for the release and would also mention that future releases will follow Debian stable releases. The article can be a template for news about future releases of BL.

At the risk of being a contrarian, Why not customize Ubuntu to feel like BL?

Counter with "BL is 99% Debian stable, which has had a major release roughly every 2 years going back to 2006"... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian_ve … se_history

Also counter with "By the way, Ubuntu is based on Debian's unstable branch." You could then ask what specific programs or versions of programs they're worried about BL not being compatible with. Post those questions here and I'm sure someone will tell you if your good or not.

You could also post your reasons for not using Ubuntu at work, we might have some suggestions.

re: updating our web page as you suggest, our small team has a lot going on at the moment and, to be perfectly honest, yours is the first mention I've heard of regarding using BL in a corporate environment. When @nobody has the time and as we get closer to Helium, which we've been working on since the New Year, the web page will get updated. Posting a thread here as you did seems not too inconvenient to me for the time being.

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Re: [Resolved] Bunsenlabs Releases

I also use BL in the Enterprise.

I work for a small MSP (Managed Service Provider). We offer our clients (local municipalities, private business and non-profit organizations) IT consulting and project design/implementation management services.

I'm our network engineer / chief sysadmin / pick a hat to wear if my PFY (BOFH reference) can't handle it.

I use BL on my Thinkpad to RDP into servers and workstations, configure and control ESXi virtual machine farms, ssh into various devices such as switches and SAN's. So on and so forth.

Now being a smaller company and with myself being the Sr. Technical Person (My actual title is Network Services Manager) my motto is: Use Windows unless you know linux, then use whatever you want. I don't want the client calling/e-mailing me complaining about a tech w/out the proper tools. We don't have an established policy for this per se. As we grow and hire more techs, we're discussing giving them the option of using either a Mac or a Windows laptop. Should they show sufficient technical skill, they may opt for linux. As long as they aren't using the Barbie distro or something, I'm fine with that.

Re: [Resolved] Bunsenlabs Releases

@geekosupremo

Sorry to take so long to get to this thread, but running ubuntu with openbox is the direction that I am headed. I have openbox running in ubuntu now and I'm configuring it to look more and more like bunsenlabs. I'm still running BL on all my other PCs. I think everyone will be happy.

@everyone else

Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate the thoughts and the help.
