I had recently installed POL and everything was working fine, until the day I did
apt update && apt upgrade
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
While doing I was asked to remove some libraries/dependencies by using apt autoremove which I did.
Since then programs in POL started crashing. After trouble shooting I realized that wine configuration isn't working. I can't open wine configuration window while creating the virtual disc or by going through the configure button. There is no way I can change the OS to Win7 through wine configuration. If I continue to install a program ignoring wine configuration, I get a POL windows saying wine has crashed.
I uninstalled POL, deleted the configuration files, and reinstalled it, however it's the same thing.
During start up, I get three pop ups (,
and
). These pops were there even when POL programs were running fine.
Any help?

Probably not without some details. But first...
Maintenence procedure, either...
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
OR
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
OCCASIONALLY and with GREAT CAUTION...
sudo apt-get autoremove
OR, to also remove the system configuration files...
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
Either will leave the user configs intact, you have to manually remove those. You HAVE to check autoremove, it has the capability of removing major components, network-manager-gnome is one that happens a lot.
Very occasionally you might want to clean your package cash with...
sudo apt-get clean
re: your problem, without knowing what autoremove did, I doubt this can be solved. View the logs for apt get with your text editor by running in a terminal, for example...
gksu gedit /var/log/apt/term.log
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Yes, it did remove few things.. not sure what they are or how they are related though...

I'm not the best to troubleshoot this, but please run the same command only open history.log instead of term.log, that hopefully will more clearly show what autoremove yanked.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

jessie wanted to autoremove 50-something libraries? Hopefully HoaS or someone can make sense of this.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Hmmm.. HoaS, waiting for you...
By the way, I need to know how safe is the autoremove command. I like keeping my system clean and organized and therefore I usually run this program most of the time after uninstalling apps. What is the right way to use it?

You just have to double check what it's going to pull out. If it's a bunch of libraries, that's tough to do, but you can look on Debian's package search or post here.
Usually autoremove pulls program dependencies out after you REMOVE something, it rarely does after an installing a program and when it does it's a handful of packages.
What probably happened is you removed one or several things that had a lot of library dependencies, but didn't use apt or apt-get again right away. Then the next time you did you ran the upgrade and were informed that those libraries weren't needed anymore. Do you remember removing anything in the last few days? Reinstalling them would reinstall the libraries and would fix your problem if that's what caused it.

I see... So just to make myself clear, autoremove is safe and must be used to only after removing a program and not in other circumstances.
About installing anything recently, I am not sure. I don't think I did install any programs recently.
How about installing wine the normal way and seeing?
apt install wine-devel

apt install wine-devel
Don't forget that apt-get commands can be run with -s/--simulate parameters, so you can see what it intends to do
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -s wine-devel

I see. So what does -s actually do. Do it still install wine? Or should I reinstall again?
By the way, I am going to first see if HoaS has any workaround to reinstalling wine...

Hmmm.. HoaS, waiting for you...
By the way, I need to know how safe is the autoremove command. I like keeping my system clean and organized and therefore I usually run this program most of the time after uninstalling apps. What is the right way to use it?

autoremove is safe and must be used to only after removing a program and not in other circumstances.
Not even close to what I said. Autoremove automatically removes packages left behind when you remove a package you manually installed.
Since it's automatically removing things, it behooves you to review what it will do first.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Thank you for the informative url. I would like to know if you have any suggestion to install/run programs on POL?

I see, but sometimes, I have noticed that after removing a programs, it is displayed in the terminal that some libraries (with names are of no use and I can/should remove it using apt autoremove. This is when I generally use that command.
