Chromium unsupported browser for Gmail

Not getting this problem on other linux systems, but gmail complains about the chromium browser on my bunsenlabs box ?  This has only popped up recently. Have run updates and upgrades.

A web search says

If you have the Chrome Browser version 53 and below, Gmail will stop working on it, from 8th Feb 2017

AFAIU Gmail generally only supports the current and previous versions of most browsers, so if you are running Debian Stable then your Chromium version may have fallen behind. Which is odd, because the latest security update for Jessie is v56.0.2924.76-1~deb8u1.

wouldn't it be easier to use a mail client instead? e.g. thunderbird? gmail won't complain then.

As a sidenote: You could also try to switch to a different - in some aspects more preferable - e-mail service provider e.g. mailfence, tutanota, protonmail - whatever you like better.

Not surprisingly folks here beat me to the punch already. Ninjas!

Email client was one, another that comes to mind is user-agent spoofing though have no idea how to do that in chromium anyway.

Sure it's doable. Never cared enough about chrome/ium to look into it.

Not certain if this is related to your problem but was experiencing this when installing into a new box.  I get a "ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR" when I try to log into my Google account.  This link helped me:

Basically the second post resolved my issue - by setting maximum TLS to 1.2 in chrome://flags
