Arbitrary boot success & VT-trouble!

Hi great devs and helpers!

Love this distro, been my regular for tens of months!

A long time ago I ran into trouble when attempting to boot; In the middle of the booting process when starting the different services it suddenly FLIPPED and started stopping all the services instead! Until complete shutdown!

I would attempt several times and randomly it would succeed! Also it seemed to be logged in with a 'default' desktop, ie. my background would be gone, and my tilda (drop-down terminal) configs would be reset. Etc.
I originally turned off the login prompt to go directly to the desktop, but suddenly it asked for username/passwd.

Also upon switching from GUI to VT's (virtual terminals) (Ctrl + Alt + F1-Fn) would cause system to sudden hibernate OR screen off! Hitting the power button would reawaken it OR closing-opening lid would turn screen back on.

To me this seems complex and I don't really know how to pursue this troubleshootingwise. I've combed through the logs but not sure what I'm looking for!

When booting up successfully the first VT reports that there ain't no job control for this shell (ioctl).

I've been tinkering with the system a bit, like turning on/off different services (systemd) and compiling otherwise unavailable software. Also added/removed guest account.

I could just reinstall the whole shabang, but I hate that route while it takes the learning out of it!

Anybody have a clue about where to procure clues?

Would be appreciated!

You broke it, you get the pieces 

If I understand correctly you did tinker something in systemd, turned off certain services, installed/compiled some application ... Do you really expect answer, different from 'put back that in systemd, turn on those service, and remove those application' ... 8o 8o

Seriously, IMHO, complete reinstall would be the easiest way to go, considering you don't really know what did you do to your setup.

If you want to upload the entire log to https://paste.debian.net/, I could have a quick look at it.

The output of this command would probably be useful:

systemctl --failed
