No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

Hey all,

I'm sure that this exact problem has been posted more times than HoaS can, well, shake a head on a stick at.

I have no sound with my Nvidia graphics card. I have a Haswell GPU so I don't think it's the Broadwell issue.

Here are all of the outputs. If something's missing, let me know, I'm just going off of what other people generally post.

lspci | grep Audio

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

@OP: I see that you are still using volti, this has been dropped in favour of volumeicon-alsa (plus a custom script to launch PA correctly) for the Deuterium point release:

https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-co … ostart#L71

You can implement the change yourself by following this guide:

https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=2266

In respect of your actual problem, do you need sound through the HDMI output in your laptop?

The Intel card is being used for the laptop speakers and the NVIDIA card is only needed for HDMI — if this is indeed what you want then the backported drivers would probably be the way to go, as dr_iian suggests smile

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

@HoaS, that could indicate what the problem is; The device isn't a laptop, it's a desktop tower hooked up to a TV via HDMI. I probably have the configuration wrong, then. My goal is to have the audio come out of the television's integrated speakers.

I would recommend switching to volumeicon (as per the link I supplied above) and installing and using pavucontrol to set the default output to your HDMI card.

Once that is done, you can troubleshoot any problems that crop up with the driver.

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

OKay, I went through and did everything you've suggested, but there is still no sound. How do I go about troubleshooting the driver?

Generally, I like these guides:

https://xkcd.com/627/

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ge … leshooting

https://xyne.archlinux.ca/etc/dyn/img/g … _Guide.svg

Specifically, I think we need to check exactly where we are at the moment and then work from there.

Can we see the output of:

which bl-start-pulseaudio-x11
amixer
pacmd list-sinks
lspci -knn

Oh my god, that diagram is actually everything. I tried AntegrOS, and I was dead in a week. That chart would have seriously helped.

Here's the output, in the order that you asked for them @HoaS.

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

That shows that your PCH card is set as the default and that the output is muted.

So un-mute the output and try:

pacmd set-default-sink 0

The same effect can also be achieved by launching `pavucontrol` and clicking through the options.

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

Well, according to the output that should be working so I am at a complete loss here, sorry.

Since my efforts have failed miserably, perhaps try @dr_iian suggestion?

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

I feel kind of bad that this was beyond what should happen. I thought about it, but the Debian man pages on it kind of frighten me that it'll be just another problem. I guess if there's no workaround, that's what it has to be, though.

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

Okay, so I tried to set up backports, but I'm getting a 404 error for all of the amd64 packages in backports.

Err http://ftp.debian.org Jessie-backports/non-free amd64 Packages
  404 Not Found [IP: 130.89.148.12 80]
Err http://ftp.debian.org Jessie-backports/contrib amd64 Packages

Err http://ftp.debian.org Jessie-backports/main amd64 Packages

Err http://ftp.debian.org Jessie-backports/jessie-backports amd64 Packages
  404 Not Found [IP: 130.89.148.12 80]

Do you guys need me to post this somewhere else?

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

Have another look at the sources - you have a typo wink (should be "jessie-backports", not "Jessie-backports")
Sources - sources.list and backports details

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

Oh no. Why am I like this. Thank you @damo.

So, got it installed, but slight problem. The font size for everything is impossible to read. I tried using the graphical Openbox configuration tool, but now all I can see are the window titles and the right click menu. Everything in applications is only a few pixels in height.

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

^ This is a common problem, and googling will show up many examples. I'm presuming you have a HiDPI monitor, if so see Arch wiki HiDPI (See the Xserver section - there is also a link for a fix).

Example output from my machine:

$ xdpyinfo | grep -B 2 resolution
screen #0:
  dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (480x270 millimeters)
  resolution: 102x102 dots per inch

Re: No audio output with Nvidia card [SOLVED]

Okay, cool. I got it fixed. I didn't even have an xorg.conf. Thanks for all the help! everything works great.
