[SOLVED] Installing latest wine from repos and running applications

I installed wine using the instructions found in https://wiki.debian.org/Wine#Standard_installation.

1. I enabled the i359 architecture using the command

dpkg --add-architecture i386 && apt update

2. Then I installed wine using the command

apt install wine

It downloaded the necessary files and thus installed it.

What next? How do I run an .exe file. When I try to open it, the system open the file using the Archive Manager.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing latest wine from repos and running applications

How do I run an .exe file

I like to do most things from the shell, so:

wine foo.exe

When I try to open it, the system open the file using the Archive Manager.

Try right-clicking on the .exe then select "Open With Other Application..." and pick WINE; make sure that the "Use as default for this kind of file" box is checked before you close the dialogue.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing latest wine from repos and running applications

And to run wine apps from the menu, for commands I use eg:

"wine ~/Mandelbulb3Dv191r2/Mandelbulb3D.exe"

"wine '/home/damo/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Apophysis 2.0/Apophysis.exe'"

I like to use the shell too, but didn't know about this syntax. This worked! While doing so also notice that cd will not change directory to a folder with a white space in the name. Had to rename the folder name without a white space and then I could CD to that folder to execute wine x.exe.

I had tried this before posting, but could not see Wine among the listed applications. Gave me doubts whether wine was properly installed too.  the list, there is this option called A wine application in the list, and this is the option to choose.

I am not sure that I understand this.. Sorry I am just a beginner.

Do you mean to say that this method is used to make an option in the menu (right click desktop) for that app to be run using wine?

While doing so also notice that cd will not change directory to a folder with a white space in the name.

You can use double quotation marks or \ to "escape" the spaces when using the terminal, for example:

cd "Folder with spaces"

Or:

cd Folder\ with\ spaces

Or simply type `cd Fol` then press the <Tab> key and let the shell auto-complete the name for you wink

The above method worked when .exe file was an installed/portable version of the software.

In the case of the installer, it opens the installer and I am able to install the application. But how do I get the installed application to open. Where do I find it or launch it?

Google the application name and get the name of the executable. Look for the executable in the wine directory - probably "~/.wine/drive_c/windows"

Yes, "~/.wine/drive_c/windows" was the directory. I was able to find the application and run it.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing latest wine from repos and running applications

I noticed that the version was 1.6.2 but winehq website says that the stable release is 1.8.6.

Is there any reason why the apt install wine doesn't install or apt update && apt upgrade doesn't upgrade to the latest release?

Read up on Debian package policy: https://www.debian.org/releases/

Almost everything released after the Jessie freeze won't be included in your upgrade/dist-upgrade, so unless you are running unstable/experimental you won't get your new bottle of Wine wink

Check out the version in backports though.

Ah, that explains it... So, for a reliable bottle of wine, I gotta wait for a stable update (8.x) or 9! Thanks!

Best to only use backports sparingly though, they are derived from the development branches and, as such, may be more buggy and more vulnerable than the stock jessie packages.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing latest wine from repos and running applications

Isn't there any other way that I can stay up-to-date with wine stable versions? Maybe installing it in a different way? How about installing it by downloading the stable version from https://dl.winehq.org/wine/source/?
