Hello,
Thank you for having this forum. It is a good one.
I have installed crunchbangeee on an eee pc 900A.
The issue I am having is the characters on the desktop are in Japanese. Not the stuff on the right top, but most everything else including the right click menu. Since I cannot read most of the headings I do not know where to go to change this.
Please help.
Thank you.

Open a tty with "Control-Alt-F1" and enter
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
...and follow the instructions
You may need to reboot to show the change.

Thank you. I will try it when I get home.

That helped some. But the right click menu still had the japanese. I edited a menu.xml file and got rid of them.

Was it the "encoding=" on the first line? If so, where did that xml file come from?

good you got it fixed, but:
I have installed crunchbangeee on an eee pc 900A.
do you mean this?
it is based on ubuntu. we have a special section for other operating systems. i'm sure a mod will move it there soon.
but, i have a more profound remark to make:
are you sure it's a good idea to install an outdated (end of life) niche distro on that beautiful netbook?
be aware that you can never install any new software, hell, you cannot even update it. you could just as well uninstall apt & dpkg.
if it runs now, fine, but for how long?
and consider all the networking vulnerabilities that have been discovered & fixed in the past 8 (!) years.
it is perfectly possible & recommended to install a CURRENT distro on an eee pc.
probably even bunsenlabs will run fine, if not i'd recommend antiX or building up a minimal system from a debian cli install, or...

@OP: I agree with ohnonot, you should use a current distribution.

@Geek2150, the current release of BunsenLabs works very well on my eeepc. I would highly recommend, as other have done, that you install it or another current distribution.
The servant lifted off a kind of ottoman a long peacock-blue drapery, rather of the nature of a domino, on the front of which was emblazoned a large golden sun, and which was splashed here and there with flaming stars and crescents. “You’re to be dressed as Thursday, sir,” said the valet somewhat affably.
