Hello,
there was a similar thread over on #! which I started after it became impossible to listen to last.fm in many countries.
So this thread for suggestions for good audio streaming channels, radio stations, what ever you want to call them. Not single tracks/artists.
Preferably without a web browser.
most people listen to one or several soma.fm stations - works nicely with playlists opened from your favorite media player.
I pointed out OEM several times (stream address).
I also pointed out bluemars and its revival echoes of bluemars. at first they were just playing the old stuff, but the playlist is continuously expanding, adding more and more extremely interesting and experimental sounds.
Please use CODE tags for code.
Search youtube without a browser: repo | thread

BTW. anyone using mpv to stream radio? I'd like to replace mplayer for mpv. I keep mplayer onboard just for this. No idea about how to do it with mpv (haven't made my homework on this either...)
Offline
Might have already mentioned this somewhere in the #! forums (possibly in a reply to you, ohnonot), but I don't really listen to "traditional" internet radio stations anymore. Most of my streaming is usually via Soundcloud or MixCloud. I get a bunch of newsletters and links in my RSS feed pointing to various mixes of interest, and I just open them with the mobile apps. Those, along with the usual channels, labels and podcast series I already follow, are already overkill for me, frankly.

^Music licensing in Japan is a pain apparently. The record companies are very conservative.
Some other services work here though, eg jango.com or grooveshark
I wish Pandora was back - that was a great way to discover new music.

Maybe this would be better started in another thread, but I'd also be interested in a list of recommended Linux radio shows and/or tech shows online.

I have a subscription to Live365 and it is great when the Flash UI works under Linux. I've been told be the tech support staff there to try using the mobile version as a workaround for the Flash issues under Linux. I briefly tried a few weeks ago, but apparently you need to know the exact link to channels/stations. I tried using the channel/station name of some of my faves, as I thought I knew them, and that didn't work. I haven't spent any time since then trying to get the mobile version of their site to work.
Anyways, they have a vast selection of stations covering all genres of music. I highly recommend it. You can also listen for free if you don't mind putting up with commercials. I've discovered a number of artists by listening to some of the channels/stations under the New Age and acoustic guitar genres.

You can listen to Live365 with an audio player if you have a member number and password. I got this little script from here quite a while ago and keep meaning to try to extend it to search from the command line. Some day.
Meanwhile, if you already know the station you want to listen to, just plug it into the script, along with your members number and password - it's hard-coded atm:
#! /bin/sh
# radio id
#STATION=370194
STATION=inhotep
USERID=member_12345678912
PASSWD=********
curl --cookie-jar curlcookies --output curldump --location-trusted "http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/login.cgi?url=http://www.live365.com/index.live&membername=${USERID}&password=${PASSWD}"
SANE=`grep SaneID curlcookies | cut -f7`
SESS=`grep sessionid curlcookies | cut -f7 | sed s/${USERID}%3A//`
mplayer "http://www.live365.com/play/${STATION}?SaneID=${SANE}&membername=${USERID}&session=${SESS}"
I've just retested it and it works OK if you use the station name at the end of the page url, in this case 'http://www.live365.com/stations/inhotep'

Thank you for the info. I figured out how to get the mobile web format to work. You need to know the station username, not the station name, to plug into the URL; e.g. http://www.live365.com/mplayer/astreaux. Happily streaming from Live365 again.

Dublab does work outside of Japan. I thought it would since it's a .com site. I'm listening to it as I type this post; nice stuff, although I'm sure Live365 has a station(s) that play the same style of music.

Oh-My-God!
This is great. it has nothing to do with japanese dub reggae; it calls itself future roots radio.
there's all sorts.
i was just listening to "the german tape scene of the early 1980s". historically epic.
http://dublab.com seems to have 5 distinct streams:
DUBSTREAM
DREAMSTREAM
DUBLAB.DE
DUBLAB.JP
DUBLAB.ES
2 different streams are available here: http://dublab.streamguys.com but i couldn't quite figure out if they 100% represent the choices available on the website.
anyhow, would somebody be able to extract the stream addresses from the website? there's also a popup player.
i think someone once wrote a script for some other radio website, and published it over on #! forums...
or at least give me a pointer where to look in the java scripts?
