Netbook slows down after a while

Hey Guys,

I spend the last few months testing between many different distros.

over Bodhi, Fedora 22, Puppy Linux and ArchLinux I came to BunsenLinux.

I think i finally found, what Im looking for.

But there is one point:

After browsing for a while through the Internet it seems to get very laggy.
Some sites with many embedded videos are even laggy from the beginnig.
Most time there are still 500MB of free RAM and Swap remains totally unused.

I know my Aspire One is not the thoughest one, but I think some basic browsing should be possible without lags.

My System Specs are:
Acer Aspire One D257
Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N570   @ 1.66GHz
2 GB Ram (sadly there is no option for installing more due to cpu limitation)
120GB SSD Silicon Power Slim S55 SATA 6Gb/s TLC
System is 64bit and up-to-date

I doesn't matter which browser I choose; Ive tried Qupzilla,Firefox,Opera,Chromium

I dont know where to start to look where something is wrong.
Any suggestions?

cheers Marco

Re: Netbook slows down after a while

If you are browsing with Firefox, try to block unneccessary traffic with add-ons like uBlock and/or uMatrix and check that the internet connection is good enough, dns-setup is not too slow, there is enough space on the hdd and there is nothing in the background using bandwith. On an older machine I had a similar issue after the machine got too hot (is it only lagging while browsing or e.g. also during watching movies with hd resolution?). Just for checking the lagging issue, you might also try the Brave browser as it blocks lots of things on default (but I would not recommend using it otherwise).
I'm afraid you are not the only one with this issue, as searching for that particular netbook model there are lots of complaints about it being a bit too slow. There is an easy to find article called "13 Reasons Why Your Computer is Slow", check those points too.

Re: Netbook slows down after a while

I recommend installing Google Chrome (there is an entry in the BL menu for this) and setting FlashPlayer for videos rather than HTML5, it's the only way to get hardware acceleration in browsers under GNU/Linux.

Re: Netbook slows down after a while

Hey violent storm. Many of us have had a lengthy talk and discussion about a similar issue.  View some of the posts I made here:

Flash-Player Maxing out CPU

And you'll see I experienced something very similar. I often use a netbook (which in my opinion is probably 90% of the problem).  Firefox is very...very heavy handed in terms of flash and video.  I even tried other browsers but I think it's really just a matter of limited resources on netbooks,  overheating, etc.  If you can try Palemoon or Chrome, this *may* allieviate some of the burden, but don't expect a ton of improvement.

What Plugin / browser are you currently using?

Re: Netbook slows down after a while

Hey Guys;
thanks for your fast replies.
I can't belive that its a cpu limitation,  because the fan is not at full speed an the cpu is at 30-40% of load @ 1,33GHz :-/
even the ram is not fully used, its about 40-70% used. swap usage is at 0%

I will have a closer look to the mentioned thread.
Now Im using Firefox and testing the ublock origin Plugin, there are no other plugins.

The purpose of the netbook is 90% browsing the web and 10% basic ssh/cli work, so I have to test how it would play h.264 files with higher resolution.
But if Im remember correctly, the GMA 3150 isn't capable of hardware acceleration at all.
