I recently installed Bunsenlabs, and it's fantastic, but I'm having an odd issue. So far, I've updated rc.xml, and menu.xml, and I've added some themes and icons (which actually broke the system at first, since I also deleted a few that, it turns out, are absolutely necessary). Now some apps, like pavucontrol and seahorse display in a very odd way:
1. pavucontrol is missing all of the volume slide controls (the slide bars between 0 and 100%) and all the dropdown menus (eg, playback, recording, etc.) are way too close together. Also, the outlines around everything are gone.
2. all the menus in seahorse are way too close together. Also, all outlines are gone (eg, the outlines around cancel/continue buttons are gone)
3. Catfish is also missing all outlines (eg, there is no outline around the search box, so you can't actually see where it is).
As I type this, I realize galculator also has this problem.
Obviously, I've removed something I shouldn't have. And, it seems that all the affected apps use GTK+.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what I've done that could have caused GTK apps to display improperly. I'm hoping someone here is.
Thanks.

Sounds like a messed up gtk3 theme - which ones have you tried? Do you still have the issue with the default BL gtk themes?

I am currently using "Bunsen" as a theme and "Numix Circle" as an icon theme. However, even when I switch back to "Faenza-Bunsen" as an icon theme, the problem persists.

I wonder if you have uninstalled a necessary library, like libgtk-3-0.
What is the output of
apt-cache policy bunsen-themes libgtk-3-0
Perhaps reinstalling bunsen-themes may restore any missing packages?
You haven't tried installing gnome themes by any chance have you?

Interestingly, when I look up bunsen-themes in synaptic, it is not installed. When I try to install it, I get the following error:
bunsen-themes:
Depends: libgtk-3-0 (<3.20) but 3.22.2-1 is to be installed
When I run the command you suggested, I get:

I recently installed Bunsenlabs,.... So far, I've updated rc.xml, and menu.xml, and I've added some themes and icons .....
And didn't mention that you had messed about with your sources - you now have a FrankenDebian system: DontBreakDebian
The easiest way out of it is to reinstall
Remember the bl-welcome screens at first boot? You had to answer "I understand" when informed about the risks of mixing sources.

I was going to ask what you meant by this, until I realized I'm a ******* idiot. I took the sources.list file from an old install and pasted most of it into the sources.list for this one.
ugh.
Thanks.
Is there a way to mark this "solved"?

^ All part of the learning process
(Best to learn from other peoples error's though )
EDIT: You can edit the title of your first post yourself. Although it isn't actually "SOLVED" I guess.
BTW the definitive BL sources are described here: Sources - sources.list and backports details

Unpack the .deb and change the libgtk-3-0 dependency in debian/control then rebuild the .deb and install it.

it would have been to get back readable menues, outlined tabs, visible checkboxes and the like as OP suggested.
@Head_on_a_Stick: building adapta-theme went like a charm, but i don`t like the white/blue background and would have hoped for something more "blackish".. but i will see whether i could tweak the bg-color.
But things look better with this theme so thanks for the tip anyways!
