Re: Steam on Wine runs, but all of the text is missing.

It looks to me like you're gonna need Windows if you really want to run Steam for Windows, realistically speaking. sad WINE is not necessarily "supposed" to work, it's more of a 'try something and hope for the best' kinda thing. It just works for some things and not others, it's a bit hit and miss. It's just possible that someone else on here can help but it really looks to me like there's not much hope, unfortunately. sad

The servant lifted off a kind of ottoman a long peacock-blue drapery, rather of the nature of a domino, on the front of which was emblazoned a large golden sun, and which was splashed here and there with flaming stars and crescents. “You’re to be dressed as Thursday, sir,” said the valet somewhat affably.

Re: Steam on Wine runs, but all of the text is missing.

Also bear in mind, the version of WINE shipped with Debian stable (and therefore bunsen) is an older one (1.6.2) and will likely suffer more issues than shown at WINEHQ, you might be better off with the jessie-backports version (1.8.5) , which is much closer to the current upstream release (1.8.6), it *might* be worth a shot upgrading to that.

Personally I would not be pursuing this, generally my own approach with WINE is try it, if it works straight out the box, YAY! If not, revert to dual boot or Windows inside a virtual machine.

However, for your current issue, looking at the obvious place WINE HQ App DB entry for Steam

This issue is directly addressed partway down the page:

Steam Client Build Issues wrote:

Steam Client Store/(built-in) Web Browser not working

Affects all Steam Client builds, since Steam with build date Oct 7 2015. The most obvious symptom of this issue is that you get backtrace error pop-up(s) referring to steamwebhelper.exe crashing. Typically, with recent builds of Wine Staging, you will see black/blank areas - in place of rendered web content. The Chromium Embedded Framework" (CEF), that Steam is built on, now has sandboxing/kernel hooking enabled by default. The CEF sandboxing hooks directly into the Windows kernel and this breaks under Wine. See bug 39403.

Ensure that your Wine (Windows) version is left at the default setting of Windows XP (this can easily be checked with the winecfg utility). Setting this to a more recent Windows release version introduces additional (known) compatibility issues. See bug 39403. If a Steam game needs to use a newer version of Windows, for compatibility reasons, then you will (currently) have to accept that the Steam Store will be broken!

Workaround Option 1 ........

A little basic research of your own would have turned this up considering you've already been linked to the WINE App DB before, along with more than one suggested workaround...

If you are going to ask on the WINE boards, or seek help there, I strongly recommend moving to at least the jessie-backports version, they're not going to be very interested in helping with issues in old versions.

Dual boot with Windows is a MUCH better solution for Windows exclusive games,

Re: Steam on Wine runs, but all of the text is missing.

I believe that the text problem is because you need either tahoma or mscorefonts installed. There is likely to be other issues and I believe the times I have gotten steam running through wine I still had issues such as not being able to purchase through the store, etc.

Of course, this begs the question why you are wanting to run steam through wine instead of the native version offered in Jessie. Here is the info needed to setup the native version. Debian Steam.

The question was asked in the OP's previous help request thread, and the same link given.
